About

Carolanna Parlato’s paintings draw on memories and imaginings of color and light. They are spaces for color; color is both material and subject. Its effects are revealed in the process of seeing and perceiving. She mixes an acrylic paste into pigment, which allows her to produce paintings with varying degrees of opacity and subtle color shifts. Using brush and palette knife in a spontaneous manner, rejecting and reworking the paint, a many-layered crust forms on the surface of the paintings. The various acts of painting, brushing, scraping, pouring and smearing are highly concentrated. Parlato balances the deliberate with the spontaneous, irregular harmonies with moments of resistance. Through this delicate balance, somewhere between chaos and control, the paintings take shape. The viewer can appreciate their tactile materiality up close and follow various traces of movement in the paintings from a distance. The paintings have an open quality that suggests the compositions are constantly in flux. Carolanna Parlato received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. She has exhibited in numerous museums, galleries and venues such as the Drawing Center (NYC) Art in General (NYC), White Columns (NYC), Hunterdon Art Museum (New Jersey), the Brooklyn Museum, BRIC, the Dedalus Foundation Gallery at Industry City (Brooklyn, NY) and the Fullerton Art Museum (CA). Parlato’s paintings are included in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, ArtBank Collection, US Dept. of State, Washington, DC, Public Art for Public Schools, NYC, the Francis Greenburger Collection, Islip Art Museum, Pfizer Inc. and many important private collections. In addition, Parlato is a nominee for the 2016 Anonymous Was A Woman Award. She lives and works in her hometown Brooklyn.
