Christine Olmstead
It Will Only Hurt a Little #6, Original Contemporary Ethereal Abstract Painting

2022

About the Item

It Will Only Hurt a Little #6, Original Contemporary Abstract Painting, 2022 79" x 36" Mixed Media on Paper This large-format abstract work by artist Christine Olmstead is the sixth work from her inaugural series on paper titled It Will Only Hurt A Little. This painting has qualities of the magical and mystical with the inclusion of metallic gold paint, both in larger washes and as loose contour lines running throughout the work. The paint is applied in large washes, with colors bleeding into one another and into the white of the paper, as if fading in and out from reality. There is also an element of moodiness and great depth to the work with a bluish black and gray covering a great deal of the composition, providing great contrast and movement to the ethereal quality of the work. Subtle spots of turquoise and periwinkle provide unexpected dimension and a playful quality to the painting. Images with frames are examples only; this work comes unframed. Artist Commentary: Everything hurts. This is my first series of works on paper. Paper reminds me of skin – it’s thin. These works needed to be delicate, just like people. This series references two previous series, “The Divide” (2018) and “Gaslight” (2020). The Divide touched on themes relating to the death of loved ones and tracking our lifelines as we travel through dark and light, love and loss. “Gaslight” was about the pain of conflicting realities, however in this series, our lifelines turned to gold. You have value greater than gold despite the shaky nature of reality. “____, It Will Only Hurt a Little” is a catalog of the losses we’ve all experienced. How do you keep going when everything is working against you? Do you still have value despite everything pointing to the contrary? You’re still golden. Your losses don’t dictate your future. Rest in the pain, let it wash over you. Stay with us. Be gentle. This piece is acrylic and gold on paper, 36”x79”. About the Artist: Christine Olmstead is an abstract artist whose work has exploded since releasing her first collection in 2015. Her pieces are what she calls “internal landscapes.” Christine has been painting and drawing several days a week since she was 18 months old. Her mother, an art historian, stressed the importance of art history from a young age. Her journey has taken her from impressionism in childhood, to realism in middle school through college mastering various mediums and finally to abstraction in her adult life and professional career. Her works are conceptual, abstract, and mixed media. Olmstead focuses on movement, light, color, and sound to convey story and internal moods and energy. It is through a deeply meditative practice, combined with music that she exercises her synesthesia and painting practice. Christine’s paintings are conceptual in nature, focusing on healing, seeking peace, restoring painful memories, and infusing light and beauty into the work. She views her works like icons; much in the same way a Christian would hang a portrait of Mary in their home to remind them to pray, Christine's pieces are also icons to remind viewers to breathe, slow down, seek light, create beauty, and practice peacefulness. Christine resides and paints in Northern Virginia and ships her works world-wide.

Provenance Compass Rose, Chicago Born Sylvan Irwin Goldberg in 1924 and raised in the Bronx, Michael Goldberg was an important figure in American Abstract Expressionism, who began taking art classes at the Art Students League in 1938. A gifted student, Goldberg finished high school at the age of 14 and enrolled in City College. He soon found New York’s jazz scene to be a more compelling environment, and he began skipping classes in favor of the Harlem jazz clubs near campus. Goldberg’s love of jazz would become a lifelong passion and a key component to his approach to composition in his paintings. From 1940 to 1942, like many of the leading artists of the New York School, Goldberg studied with Hans Hofmann. In 1943, he put his pursuit of painting on hold and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Serving in North Africa, Burma, and India, Goldberg received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star before being discharged in 1946. After his service, he traveled and worked in Venezuela before returning to the United States, settling back in New York and resuming studies with Hofmann and at the Art Students League. Living downtown and frequenting the Cedar Bar, Goldberg befriended many of the artists of the New York School. In 1951, his work was included in the groundbreaking Ninth Street Show, co-organized by Leo Castelli, Conrad Marca-Relli, and the Eighth Street Club, and featuring the work of - among others - Hofmann, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline. In 1953, the Tibor de Nagy...
