About the Item
"Untitled, 1974" by Claudia Sisemore, acylic on canvas, 58 x 56 inches, $7,200. Unframed.
"I have a vague idea of what I am going to paint. I read that many artists are inspired by an idea before they begin their work and plan their approach and process based on that idea or muse. Others become inspired after they have begun working and watching colors, shapes and designs form. I basically belong the second group. Usually, after painting begins in a loose, free manner, I become excited by certain colors and patterns and continue from there." -Claudia Sisemore

Caudia Sisemore says she was teaching English when artist David Chaplin (an equally popular and influential teacher) was at Weber and initially got her into landscape painting. “Then he took me to a show at the Art Barn and Lee [Deffebach] was showing there [with Don Olsen and Larry Elsner]. It was when she was with [then- husband] Gordon Bailey, and my first impression of abstract was ‘anyone could do that.’
“I took a class from Lee at the Art Barn and her approach was, of course, just do whatever you want to do. Lee was a fantastic Abstract Expressionist.” The two showed together at Westminster in 1974, Color Field and Abstract Expressionist work. “She came up to the house, we were good friends, and she said will you show me how you do [Color Field] painting. I used to paint on the ground outside. I’d go to Utah Tent and Awning to get the canvas because I didn’t have any money, and I think Lee taught me how to build stretcher bars and I’d get unprimed canvas, which she hadn’t done yet, and then acrylic and watered-down stain and rollers, not as big as some of her Alph series, but big, and then brushes and poured and she watched – we learned a lot from each other. We never had the same style, though we had the same technique. “– excerpt from Ann Poore’s 15 Bytes article 6/2015

Studying under Doug Snow, Roger DesRosier, Ed Maryon and George Dibble. Sometime in the early ‘70’s she took an abstract expressionism class at the Art Barn taught by Lee Deffebach which culminated in a two person exhibit with the Deffebach and a lifelong friendship. In 1978, Sisemore received a National Endowment for the arts artist-in residence grant to teach painting at Central Wyoming College in Riverton, Wyoming and served as a filmmaker-in-residence for high school students in Dubois, Wyoming. From 1979-1994, she worked at the Utah State Office of Education as an educational filmmaker. She produced over two hundred films for classrooms, KUED programing and filmed in Mexico and the U.S. for National Satellite. At the same time, she received a number of grants as an independent filmmaker to produce documentary films on Utah Artists. In 2014 she was honored at the Rio Gallery as an outstanding teacher, painter and filmmaker. Works of her friends and colleagues were included in the show. In 2015 she received the Salt Lake Mayor’s award in visual arts and in 2017 she was selected as one of twelve outstanding female artists in Utah by Abobe Corporation. In the same year she received a lifetime achievement award from who’s who in America. So far in 2018 she has been part of 45, a group show featuring many outstanding Utah artists, past and present curated by Denis Phillips at Phillips Gallery, as well as What I Did on My Summer Vacation a two person show with Trent Alvey at Salt Lake’s main library.
Claudia Sisemore’s paintings have been shown in many major Utah shows. Her work is in collections of individuals, corporations, Salt Lake County and Utah State.

"For me, paint documents the state of things, how I feel and what is at the forefront in my thinking—maybe it’s like the soup of the day. I do not consider this process to be anything special in itself. The paintings record the daily random and absurd associations I make, which seem interesting to me after the fact. The Domestic paintings are a case in point. My wife and I have six children. Four have left home. Three are married. We are left with two children, both currently in middle school. We have about five years and they too will move out. This is on my mind. I am thinking about the layers of memories and it comes out as layers of paint. Feeling nostalgic, I think about all the noise and activity our home has absorbed. In turn, I found children’s large vinyl decals from Angry Birds...
