INES series:
The series INES consists of seven paintings: three large horizontal formats and four slightly smaller vertical formats. In their creation process, traditional oil painting merges with a spray technique commonly used in graffiti art. Clemens Wolf's paintings are based on photographs taken by the artist in abandoned and desolate locations. The digital image material is extracted by the artist on the computer and transformed into stencils made of craft paper. Clemens Wolf sprays his grid-like structures with red oil paint onto the black canvas pre-primed with a brush. The artist then finalizes the work again with meticulous detail using a brush.
The artist not only uses the color red conceptually but also formally: conceptually, it serves as a metaphor for light, and formally, due to its structure, as a spatial coordinate system. The structure of the oil paint is created by the direction of spraying during application, simultaneously giving the paintings unusually fine color nuances. The brightest spot serves as a focal point, visually placed in the background of the image, thereby enhancing the drama of the works. Clemens Wolf transforms his digital images of ruins and abandoned areas into "non-places" in his paintings: spaces that defy clearly definable references to location while still forming escapes and corridors, where the viewer's eye seems to get lost.
___
Clemens Wolf (born in 1981 in Vienna) studied painting with Ursula Hübner at the University of Art and Design Linz. In his artistic work, he deals with the capturing of irreproducible moments. At the beginning of this involvement stood the urban space with its ruins and fences. Wolf captured the beauty of decay and transience in large, monochrome landscape paintings. Wolf has had exhibitions in China, Switzerland, France, Germany and the USA. He is represented internationally by several galleries and is part of renowned collections such as the Albertina Museum.
