Cristina Estañ
Diptych Contemporary Collage, Neon Orange & Pink Color on Black. Framed in Gold

2022

About the Item

DIPTYCH COLUMN FRAGMENT, RECTANGULAR FLUOR CORAL AND PINK Belonging to the exhibition "FROM STONE TO CANVAS" inspired by the cathedral of Granada. The work FRAGMENT OF COLUMN CORAL FLUOR COLOR is intended to simulate a fragment of the columns and semicolumns characteristic of the cathedral of Granada. The main color of the series "from stone to canvas" is white with all its nuances, a chromatic scheme all its shades, a chromatic scheme that, together with touches of gold, was chosen by the master from Burgos SILOE to preside over the interior of the cathedral. The collection includes colors such as black or fluorine tones to make a wink to another of my most characteristic series, the series "Pop Miami", creating a fusion between both series as in this work. Worked with fabric on canvas, the folds, gathers and drapes that during my professional draping that during my professional career in the world of fashion, I would use to design and make distinguished garments, are part of the world of art in this work, painted and sculpted, they become a semi-rigid piece that simulates the fragment of a column. The framing in black and gold wood adds exquisiteness to the whole. About the Artist After living several years outside Spain, in cities like Bangkok (Thailand), or Dusseldorf (Germany), currently Cristina Estañ, lives and works in Alicante (Spain). Multidisciplinary artist, trained in Art and Fashion (ESED, INESCOP, UNIVERSIDAD AUTONOMA DE MADRID, among others). The DNA of her work lies in the fusion of both disciplines and the treatment of the latter is carried out in the same way that for years she worked on the creation of fashion collections. His extensive professional career in different companies in the design sector; BIGOTES (Murcia 1993/94), INDITEX (TEMPE, Alicante 1994/2006) ARTESANIA AMAYA (Alicante 2011/ 2013) as well as in several projects with his own stamp; LA DIDOT (2011/2014, Alicante) NAPO & FINA (Bangkok 2013/2015) DA NOI (Dusseldorf 2015/ 2017) together with his curious and restless character, give rise to the development of different pictorial styles in the same period of time. The work of C. Estañ, moves between opposite poles, from a subtle minimalism with colors like white and sand, to the intensity of extreme color and geometry. The work of this artist with a strong visual impact is very focused on the world of interior design.

Arao’s geometric sewn fabric paintings reference woven textiles and ethnic patterns from the Philippines, reinterpreted in kaleidoscopic fabric compositions. Fabric, a material that seemingly begs for human touch, is something we all have a level of familiarity with. Whether it is clothing worn or removed from the body, commercially bought, hand dyed, or recycled weathered canvas, Arao harnesses the tactility and multiple interpretations of fabric, often alluding to its central relationship to the human body. Precisely sewn together into tapestry-like wall works, Arao’s background in painting is evident in his mastery of color and composition. Paired with his conceptual link to his identity as a gay Filipino-American, Arao’s works simultaneously reach back through history and into the future as powerful symbols of representation and beauty. Gathered from disparate sources, carrying the psychic or physical traces of the hands that manufactured or the bodies that wore the textiles used in his fabric paintings, there is a legacy of nuance woven into the fibers of each work. Written into each color choice, use of various types of fabric, and overall composition, is a steadfast trust in process and faith in intuition. Regarding this body of work, Arao states, “ In my sewn paintings, the stability of geometric forms is disrupted through the use of altered patterns and asymmetry, creating a space that’s dynamic and shifting – much like the concept of queerness itself.” Flexible, open-ended, and bounding with vibrant color, Paolo Arao...
