David Bolduc
Sketch #1 - bold, colourful, organic, modernism, abstract, acrylic on canvas

1991

About the Item

Toronto artist David Bolduc was a modernist inspired by Jack Bush and Henri Matisse--his work was described as exotic and eccentric. A prolific traveler, his colourful, joyful abstracts often featured a central image with a painterly background. Sketch #1 is a classic example of Bolduc’s unique expressive imagery—a lyrical, ‘spray’ of bright colours--yellow, red, blue and green focuses the center against a forest green stained background highlighted by white and red markings. Bolduc’s work was filled with the vibrancy of world art—from Asian calligraphy to Persian miniatures and African drawings. "You can't really make a narrative, but you make a haiku, a poem, a statement, a joke. Some of these words have almost limitless interpretation. Putting two of them together gives you the beginnings of a thought that the painting can somehow describe.” -David Bolduc (1945-2010) Born in Toronto, Bolduc attended the Ontario College of Art for just one year and then the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts School until 1965. In 1968, he received a Canada Council Grant that allowed him to travel in Europe and Asia for eight months. He continued to travel extensively over the next 33 years while exhibiting annually at public and commercial galleries. Bolduc was also a gifted illustrator whose drawings appeared in several of the Canadian author’s Michael Ondaatje projects, among others. David Bolduc’s work is held in private, corporate, and public collections. Framed dimensions are 49.5 × 37.5 inches.
