About the Item
A fine abstract in brown tones by American artist David Lund (b. 1925). David Lund’s illustrious painting career spans over 65 years. Born in New York, the youngest child of Jewish immigrants from Poland, Lund attended the renowned High School of Music & Art as a young man, before enrolling in Queens College. He did graduate work at New York University, and was awarded the first of his two Fulbright Grants in 1957, which provided him with the opportunity to live in Rome. In addition to affording him the chance to experience the many classical masterpieces of that ancient city and throughout Italy, being in Rome allowed Lund the chance to be on friendly terms with other artists and philosophers, many of whom were Italian. During that period, his painting underwent a major advance, crystallizing a number of new ideas. It proved a key turning point in the artist’s career. While there, he exhibited with the Galleria Trastevere and upon his return to New York in 1959, the prestigious Grace Borgenicht Gallery offered him representation. He remained with the gallery, who featured his work in nine separate solo exhibitions, for over 25 years. His paintings have also been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Baltimore Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Toledo Museum of Art, the Maine State Museum, and the National Academy of Design (of which he is a member), among many others. A selection of the many public collections that contain Lund’s work include the Whitney, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Baltimore Museum, the Delaware Art Museum, and the Montclair Art Museum. Lund was a longtime professor at both Cooper Union and Columbia University, and he has also taught at Washington University, Boston University, and the Parsons School of Design. In his 90’s now, David Lund still lives and works in New York.

Adrian Heath (1920–1992) was a 20th-century British painter.
Heath was born in Burma and attended Bryanston School in Dorset, southern England. In 1938, he studied art under Stanhope Forbes at Newlyn. In 1939 and 1945–47, he attended the Slade School of Art. He served in the RAF as a tail gunner in Lancaster bombers in World War II, but spent almost the entire war as a prisoner of war at Stalag 383. During this period he became friends with and taught fellow POW Terry Frost to paint.
In 1949 and 1951, he visited St Ives, Cornwall, where he met Ben Nicholson. In the early 1950s, he was also associated with Victor Pasmore and Anthony Hill. As such he became the main link between the emerging St Ives School and British Constructivism. He was also influenced by D'Arcy Thompson. In 1953 Heath published 'Abstract Painting: its Origins and Meaning' a slim but perceptive volume appraising the development of abstraction by the early moderns.
He exhibited at the Musée Carcassonne in 1948, and at the Redfern Gallery...
