"Color Moves" is a colorful abstract with a broad linear element. Artist David Rubello studied and painted naturalism for many years. In 1965 he began studies in non-objective painting where he pursued the spatial issues of contemporary painting. His work reveals an interest in vivid colors and geometric design.
Rubello was born 1935 in Detroit, Michigan. He began formal art studies in 1950 at Cass Technical High School and continued with a scholarship to The Society of Arts and Crafts (now known as Center for Creative Studies) where he studied with Guy Palazzola (1951 - 1954). The Arts and Crafts Society of Detroit that Rubello attended is now known as College for Creative Studies (formerly Center for Creative Studies) faculty and graduates include Richard Jerzy, Harry Bertoia, Doug Chaing (currently director of Lucas Film), Stephen Dinehart (game maker, writer, designer connected with The David Lynch Foundation), Tyree Guyton (international artist), Herb Babcock, Jerome Feretti, Kevin Siembieda (writer, designer and publisher of role-playing games), Renee Radell, Philip Pearlstein, Charles McGee (nationally recognized African American sculptor of animal and dancing spirits), Philip Pearlstein (2000 Honorary Doctorate, Modern Realism style), John Louis Krieger (American Modern), William Girard (American Modern), Charles Culver, Henry Heading, and Hughie Lee-Smith.
After serving two years in the U.S. Military Rubello became a clay modeler for General Motors Design Center in Warren, Michigan. During a vacation in Italy he decided to study painting in Rome (1959 - 1961) where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Accademia Di Belle Arti (Academy of Fine Art) Rome, Italy. Later traveling to Denmark he admired the work of Richard Mortensen and studied with him for 2 years (1963 - 1964) at Det Kongelige Akademi For De Skonne Kunster (The Kings Academy of Fine Art) in Copenhagen. Rubello completed his formal art studies receiving a Master of Fine Arts degree from The University of Michigan in 1972. He went on to teach painting and drawing at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; The Pennsylvania State University, University Park and Towson State University, Towson, Maryland. He also taught Art part time at a number of Community Colleges. As an Industrial Sculptor he worked for General Motors Design in Pontiac, Buick, Cadillac 15 Year Vision, and Sculpture Studio. Rubello’s studio is in rural Macomb County Michigan where he resides with his wife artist/photographer Mary Keithan.
