Debora Hirsch
Firmamento (Calabash)

2020

About the Item

Firmamento (Calabash), 2020 Acrylic and oil on canvas 34 x 34 in Themes of power and control are salient in Debora Hirsch’s most expansive series to date, "Firmamento." The chosen title refers to a biblical conception of the Earth’s makeup: in the Old Testament, it was believed that when God created the Earth, He created a solid dome (the “firmament”) which made up the sky and held the entirety of the visible cosmos. Hirsch’s title is not necessarily religious. Rather, her poetic cosmological reference aims to uncover questions and ideas surrounding human perception, constructed worlds, colonizations, and bounded / boundless sensibilities. It is, in a sense, a meditation on the complex (and unequal) harmony of human life across varying temporalities, simultaneously replete with beauty and ugliness.

From his recent exhibition entitled, Dioramas from Eden, Andrew Jensdotter continues his practice of painting hundreds of layers of iconic pictures of a single subject from a Google image search and then carving through the final amalgamation to create an "original" of his own. What was once representational with a clear focal point becomes a decidedly all-over abstract composition almost archaeological in nature. This laborious and emotional process of erasure synchronizes with the show’s theme – an elaboration on the Garden of Eden and the concept of expulsion from paradise...
