"Even Before Anything Happens, " Abstract Oil on Canvas by Deirdre Schanen

2010

About the Item

"Even Before Anything Happens" is an oil on canvas by Deirdre Schanen. The blue expanse is calm. At the bottom right is a cream colored expanse with a line of red down it and some chips taken out of it. It is almost dystopian. Art: 36 x 48 in DEIRDRE SCHANEN Abstract Artist Deirdre Schanen grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan in the small town of Port Washington, Wisconsin. This early Midwestern influence informs most of her paintings. They reflect the tension between the lake's serene vastness and the complex confusion of rocks and detritus washed up upon its shores. Ms. Schanen moved to New Jersey in 1979 and lived there for 23 years. She received her Masters of Art during this period, as well as studying with Ronnie Landfield at the Art Student's League of New York. Deirdre and her husband are currently living in a Chicago suburb. Ms. Schanen does not plan her paintings in advance making the end product always a surprise. She approaches the broad plains of the empty canvas with the excitement and apprehension of the unknown. Everything develops as she works. Often a piece is begun with a single pencil or ink marking that mark dictates the next mark, and that the next. Layers of paint or glaze are added until the process is finally finished. Deirdre Schanen Artist Statement My paintings reflect my childhood on the shores of Lake Michigan. They explore the tension of the lake’s serene vastness with the complex confusion of the rocks and detritus washed up upon its shores. My art reflects my world filtered through my heart. I do not plan my art but, rather, develop it as I work. Something in me knows where I’m going. Painting for me is a state of being. I paint what I am. I begin with pencil or ink markings and paint drips. I continue to add layer after layer of glaze, paint and markings. The underpainting is as important to me as the final layer of paint. I perform a dance with my canvas through these spontaneous interactions. I never know where it will lead me or when my dance will be finished.

  • Mixed Media Large Pop Art Painting Drawing Brian Kenny NYC Street Art 2015
    Located in Surfside, FL
Brian Kenny, (German-American, 1982-) MIxed Media Painting with Drawing, Oil or Acrylic on Canvas. Hand signed On Verso and Dated 2015, NYC Dimensions: Sight- 30" x 24", Frame- 36" x 30" Brian Kenny (born 1982, Heidelberg, Germany) is a NYC-based American multidisciplinary artist exhibited in galleries, museums, theaters and alternative venues in the US, Canada, Russia, Israel and across Europe. In 2004 Brian began an ongoing collaboration with artist Slava Mogutin as SUPERM, and in 2016 with writer Rich Juzwiak as BOYFRIEND HOUSE. Using an array of mediums including drawing, painting, sculpture, textile, video and performance, Brian’s artwork is bright and vividly expressionistic; often autobiographical and reflective of his current states of mind which include themes of his queer identity, shifting societal perceptions about gender, sexuality and politics, urban living and free-associative wanderings of thought and creative experimentation. New York-based artist Brian Kenny’s work is a visually striking exploration of gender, sexuality, and politics in contemporary North America. Known for his experimental and expressionistic practice, Brian mixes mediums such as painting, illustration, collage, sculpture, and textiles – oftentimes all at once. Brian’s foundation in drawing is evident across his portfolio, with nearly every piece incorporating some signature scribblings from the artist. He has experimented with drawing, collage, photography, performance and, more recently, painting. “All the other mediums I’m exploring like, painting, textile art, and animation all branch out from drawing,” he explains. This focus is what makes Brian’s vast collection of work all feel so cohesive. "Both of my parents were in the US military and we moved around a lot in the US. But most of the places I lived were rural, far from big cities and art museums, so I had no idea who Andy Warhol, Mark Rothko, Chuck Close, David Hockney or Damien Hirst were. The few small art museums I visited as a child were full of old-school oil paintings; all life-like portraits, rural landscapes and historical recreations. It wasn’t until I met Slava Mogutin and moved to New York that I began to meet artists, see exhibitions at art galleries of living artists near my age, and tour lot of contemporary art museums like MoMA and begin learning about contemporary art history". Brian says. “I’m definitely not a minimalist and lean toward more narrative and figurative artwork than abstraction or decoration”. Minimalist, he is not: Brian’s work pops with vibrant colours, characters and shapes, evoking a Warholian play on pop art culture. Kenny’s signature line drawing style is reminiscent of Keith Haring and LA Ortiz and evokes comparisons to early Jean Michel Basquiat. Brian's commercial and fashion work includes art and design commissions and collaborations with Onitsuka Tiger (Japan...

Examples range from the most syrupy sentimentality to extremes of moral and intellectual confrontation. For me, the creative process is, on the simplest level, an aesthetic puzzle. Elements of the puzzle include contrast, color, visual texture, graphic pattern, and in some recent work, a simple cryptic symbolism. I have never been particularly interested in lyric or pictorial content, and though some of my work does contain undeniable spatial illusion, even that tends to be a by-product rather than a goal of the primary pursuit: the balance of light and dark, pure color and organic neutrals, energy and calm, strong pattern and subtle field. Having grown up in an environment of contemporary architecture, I have always valued the classic modern synthesis of form and function exemplified by the Bauhaus movement of the early 20th century. Hence, the simplest solutions are often the most satisfying. Obviously, the modernist ideal of efficiency in form and function requires that method of execution be as well adapted to the aesthetic goal as the visual language itself. The media before you is the result of many years of experimentation that came to its current form in early 1992. I work with dry pigment over a plaster surface. My tools are broad knives, sponges, rags and masking. The finish is a high gloss alkyd resin. CORPORATE COLLECTIONS: Allstate Insurance NBC Productions Alaska...

  • PAINT Abstract Belgian Contemporary Oil Painting Ellen De Meutter Woman Artist
    Located in Surfside, FL
Ellen De Meutter Paint 2, 2007 Acrylic, ink and oil on canvas 31.5 x 23.6 in (80.0 x 59.9 cm) Provenance: Secrets & Lies show at her American gallery Roberts & Tilton, LA in 2007 Ellen De Meutter (1981) teaches painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp. In 2006-2007 she followed the HISK programme in Ghent, in 2013-2014 she did a residency at the Jan Van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. De Meutter is represented by Tim Van Laere Gallery since 2006. (they represent Tal R, Marcel Dzama, Tomasz Kowalski and Franz West) Her work has been shown in various exhibitions in Belgium, the United States, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany and Japan. In 2010 she had her first solo museum exhibition in Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens. Ellen De Meutter alters her viewer's reality by presenting a language in which she classifies the figures, shapes and colors from her personal world into a captivating utopia. Contrary to current trends in Flemish art, De Meutter is not simply relaying an anecdote; she composes unique imagery that allows her to experiment with the placement of the subject and unique treatments of her medium. De Meutter's repertoire of vivid, semi-neon colors contrast the muted grays blacks and grays on which they lay. These seemingly energetic colors are at once enhanced by the dark undertones of the canvas below, while simultaneously insinuating a concealed gravity of subject. Belgian art critic and curator, Luk Lambrecht remarks on De Meutter's painting: "she folds back 'her' world onto itself, into a solid mass of color from which, very slowly, vague contours emerge, which safeguard our expectations about looking at an image." De Meutter's scenes are reminiscent of schoolyard games, incorporating a series of text and symbols. By combing figurative imagery with basic abstraction, Ellen De Meutter creates wildly successful compositions that allude to her comprehensive understanding of contemporary painting. She was included in the show, Tomorrow is a long time: Ellen De Meutter, Gelitin, Kati Heck, Anton Henning, Friedrich Kunath...
