About the Item
"Cipher One (Sense + Antisense)" is a 24 x 48 inch geometric abstract diptych of two 24 x 24 inch panels in red, black, white and metallic gold that translates snippets of the human genome into a quilt-like grid by substituting colored squares for the four base pairs of DNA. "Sense" and "Antisense" refer to the separate sides of the base pairs that form the double helix of DNA. The two panels are symmetrical inversions of each other, in which gold becomes black or red becomes white, and vice versa. A slightly distressed surface yields glimpses of underlying layers of contrasting color. The paintings in Denise Driscoll's Cipher series are formal translations of biological information that yield mysterious patterns both familiar and uncanny. "Cipher One (Sense + Antisense)" is signed, titled and dated on the reverse with natural unpainted birch sides.
Denise Driscoll is a Massachusetts-based contemporary painter exploring interconnection through meditative pattern. Her work has been shown throughout New England and is collected nationally. Driscoll is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.
