About the Item
Diana Greenberg’s abstract color field paintings are meditations on rhythm and color found in nature. Her intuitive process begins by taking inspiration from striking color combinations found in her immediate environment, ranging from landscapes to a particular plant or figure. She draws upon these visual records as a source material for abstraction. Whether painted from memory or photo, these images are translated to the canvas and then transformed through gestural rhythmic brush strokes. The rhythm of her mark-making is often influenced by the records she plays in the studio which are then reflected in the title of each work. Through the construction and deconstruction of these colorful forms, each composition becomes unrecognizable to its source, yet essentially linked back to nature. Equally important to the composition is the use of negative space, which give breath to the cluster of gestural marks she creates.
Greenberg was born in Dallas, TX, and currently lives in Austin, TX. She received her BBA from The University of Texas in Austin, TX. She has shown at Wally Workman Gallery, Austin, TX; The Contemporary, Austin, TX; Octavia Art Gallery, New Orleans, LA; the Geovinsky Gallery of Contemporary Art, Denver, CO; amongst others. Her work is included in the several corporate collections, including Memorial Sloan Kettering, Sabine Oil and Gas, The Fairmont Hotel in Scottsdale, AZ and the South Congress Hotel in Austin, TX.

- LithosphereBy Naomie KremerLocated in New Orleans, LAIn this new body of work, Kremer continues to explore and celebrate the physical experience of being, juggling eros, flora, fauna, and saga in abstract relationships that continue to surprise. Some of the tools are "new." Ruined old brushes and a variety of scrubbers from hardware stores provide novel ways of putting paint on canvas. Always pushing the boundary of "the tyranny of the mark, the handwriting" Kremer has accomplished this in the past with strategies such as masking and rubber stamping. Now, different tools bring their own idiosyncratic qualities of mark making, expanding the vocabulary with "different strokes." On these canvases, patterns emerge from the coalescence of chance events. Murmuration, the largest painting...Category

- Cuidado! Las ideas son ladronas de sueños, abstract blue dream-like paintingLocated in Brooklyn, NYThe title of the work in English: "Careful! Ideas are thieves of dreams" Artist Statement on “Houseplants” series: The following project began towards the end of 2017. The transition from my previous work (abstract expressionist paintings that explored processes related to my athletic practice) may seem spontaneous, but it was something that happened quite naturally for me after an ankle injury I suffered in June of that year. From a very active daily routine I was forced quite abruptly into a sedentary one. While being inactive was a circumstance that made me feel very uncomfortable and uneasy not only physically, but also emotionally, it was one that is so common - and comfortable - for the ever expanding digital society. Without realizing that I was beginning a new body of work I was drawn by a deep urge to painting humans as some sort of inanimate object. A houseplant I thought, a wild organism domesticated. I had a few ideas for the figures in mind and knew the composition would be set in an environment that can neither be recognized as indoor or outdoor, but without clear ideas of the final pieces. Having only rough pencil sketches to start from allowed the work to have elements of spontaneity and life, but also required perseverance to see them through to an unknown end. I experiment directly on the canvas with form and color until the subjects feel right (not necessarily anatomically, but rather aesthetically). Thereon changes continue until, upon stepping away from the work, the sum of its elements evoke a sense of harmony; sometimes on purpose, sometimes by mistake. This is in many ways a continuation of the processes I practiced in my previous work, only applied to a new subject. By embracing mistakes, and responding to aesthetic decisions on the canvas directly the painting begins to form harmony through trial and error, building simultaneously texture and depth, and maintaining an expressive quality.
