Minimalist, abstract landscape painting of black and gray trees in a white forest "Out of the Ashes", painted by Donald Bracken in 2019 ash on canvas mounted on panel, 48 x 42 inches framed with a black painted wood frame Ready to hang as is This black and white landscape painting was painted by Donald Bracken in 2019. This series of paintings was made in response the the fires in California, where the artist is originally from. The black trees create a cathedral ceiling formation to frame a white sky and gray forest pathway. A figure is seen walking towards the foreground, giving the composition interesting depth and a mysterious undertone. The artist mixed ash into the paint to give the composition a unique, gritty texture. The landscape painting is complemented with a black painted wood frame. There is wire on the back for easy installation. Artist statement: I have been involved with painting landscapes in one form or another for many years. At one time I had a studio on the 91st floor of the World Trade Center as an artist in residence and painted the city and the clouds above from a lofty perch. For the last year and a half I have been concentrating more on terrestrial themes: the farms, the earth, the soil from which our food springs and on which we build our foundation. Through my “dirt” paintings, I have tried to express the omnipotence of the earth, of nature and the fragility of man. I have been using dirt from farms in Glastonbury and Cornwall, and other natural substances from the ground such as river sand from the Connecticut River, clay from Cornwall, and limestone from Falls Village. I mix the dirt with heavy-bodied acrylic gel which preserves the integrity and permanence of the material. Rich populations of Native Americans may have been supplanted by settlers from another place, the rivers ebb and flow, but the land continues to sustain its people. These paintings aren’t about a place, they are of the place. I create large canvases rich in texture, with earth and materials from the land we inhabit so that the viewer can feel they are part of the landscape. More about the artist: Don Bracken is inspired by nature and incorporates many natural materials in his art. As a process-oriented artist, his process includes the discovery of materials, which he then synthesizes and formalizes in the studio. Much of his work references the World Trade Center and 9/11 drawing directly from his artist residence experience with a studio on the 91st floor in 1997. His work derives heavily from both the physical landscape and the archaeological traces of civilization, he often combines materials such as clay and acrylics with local earth, natural pigments, vines, leaves, roots, and seed pods. He incorporates rich texture, evocative form, and elements of color, light, and kinetics in pieces that describe both life’s ephemeral transience and its constant evolution, as well as documenting the human capacity to cause decline, disorder, and chaos in the natural world. Bracken has received many awards, and his pieces are in numerous American and international collections.
