Donise English
Hobgood (Abstract Red Encaustic Painting on Board with Black Geometric Patterns)

2009

About the Item

encaustic on board 24 x 24 inches This work is offered by Carrie Haddad Gallery, located in Hudson NY. This modern, abstract red-orange encaustic painting on wooden board was completed by Poughkeepsie based artist, Donise English, in 2009. The square, 24 x 24 inch panel is layered with vivid red encaustic while black geometric patterns adore the foreground in a circular orientation. Light peach stripes in the background contrast against the bold black lines. Hints of yellow encaustic detail the composition. Red encaustic is applied in short, smooth strokes creating a slight built up texture onto the surface. The work has clean, finished wood sides. English's signature is located on the back. About the work: The works on board are about the way visual diagrams present information that describes how something is made or the way it is. English is interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. She uses gouache and encaustic in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define the pictorial space. For each piece English creates a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure.

  • Little Blue (Abstract Geometric Mixed Media Encaustic Work on Wooden Panel)
    By Donise English
    Located in Hudson, NY
Little Blue, 2020 Encaustic & collage on thin edged board 12" X 12" This abstract geometric composition on wooden board features a playful geometric motif that is inspired by the artist's interest in architecture and blueprint drawings. The geometric forms are made in a more painterly, gestural manner rather than with a hard edge. Paint is not heavily built up upon the surface but it certainly exhibits a tactile quality which is characteristic of the artist's aesthetic. English's work celebrates the quirky, unexpected qualities of shapes and colors. About the artist: Donise English is a Poughkeepsie-based artist who received her MFA from Bard College and is currently a Professor of Studio Art at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. Artist Statement: I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure. • Chasmanthium Insignias: Abstract Encaustic Painting with Green, Earth Tones
    By Allyson Levy
    Located in Hudson, NY
Abstract encaustic painting with a green, earth toned palette. Made with natural plant material (Northern Sea Oats) "Chasmanthium Insignias I" made by Allyson Levy in 2021 encaustic and plant material on wood panel, 24 x 24 x 1 inches Lightweight, hangs with one d-ring, Signed, verso This modern abstract encaustic painting by Allyson Levy is made with Northern Sea Oats and green encaustic, sealed with a layer of neutral wax on a wood panel. The artist begins by finding the organic material in her 4-acre garden in upstate New York which she then arranges and embeds with encaustic on a wooden panel. The brown, earth toned sea oats are laid in a linear pattern on a wood panel with a surface of green encaustic and then sealed with clear wax. The encaustic wraps around to the sides of the panel, revealing some bumps and downward drips, accumulated during the natural drying process. The piece is lightweight and hangs on one d-ring. About the artist and her work: After moving to the rural town of Stone Ridge, NY seventeen years ago and starting a 4-acre botanical garden with her husband, mixed media artist, Allyson Levy, has found endless inspiration in the plant kingdom that surrounds her. The garden itself, named “Hortus Conclusus”, consisting of thousands of rare plants and edibles, remains at the epicenter of Levy’s art making. A fascination with earth’s bounty is expressed with her works in encaustic. Assorted organic material such as leaves, seeds, branches, insect wings...
