About the Item
Douglas Haynes, born in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1936, is a celebrated figure in Canadian abstract art. After graduating from the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art (now the Alberta College of Art) in 1958, he continued his artistic development at the Royal College of Art in Holland. In 1970, he began teaching at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Haynes' work is often described as post-painterly abstraction, but it possesses a unique quality that merges non-objective forms with subtle allusions to subject matter. His canvases are filled with dynamic shapes that evoke figures in motion, floating and dancing within a shallow, stage-like space. This sense of depth and movement is further enhanced by a rich and intense use of color and a deep, textured surface. These elements combine to create a captivating visual experience that has established Haynes as a leading voice in contemporary Canadian abstraction.
