Eliza Kopec
Planeta XV - contemporary modern mixed media sculpture painting relief

2023

About the Item

Planeta XV is a unique small size round contemporary mixed media wall sculpture relief by renowned Polish-Dutch artist Eliza Kopec. This relief is part of a body of work that continues her examination of the possibilities of cast resin. Even though Eliza's reputation is based on her geometric paintings and paper reliefs, she needs to experiment with new materials and new visual vocabularies. Starting in 2019, she spent months getting accustomed to the characteristics and possibilities of epoxy resin. This body of work shows her fascination with circular objects and meticulously made shapes. The Planeta objects are true eye-catchers on the wall and can be combined to complete wall installations. Eliza Kopec (1960, Poland) graduated with a BA in graphic art and drawing from the (today) Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. After her graduation she started working as an independent visual artist and initially made many limited edition prints for numerous Dutch magazines. At the turn of the century she became more and more focussed on making abstract reliefs and paintings based on regularity and geometry. She works with different forms and sizes: she paints on canvas, makes installations with paper and creates paper reliefs. Sometimes monochrome, just white or black, making the repetition and shapes in a work even more apparent. At the same time she also creates bright multi-coloured work. Her work is often built up from basic geometric shapes such as lines, squares and circles and translates rhythm, texts and number series into abstract images, for instance represented by a defined range of colours. Starting point for many of her works are often concrete subjects like poems, newspaper articles or arithmetic principles. By translating these concrete subjects into shapes or colours she aims to create universal images of beauty. Her work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows at galleries, art fairs, art circles and museums throughout Europe, including Pulchri Studio, Ars Aemula Naturae, KunstRAI and the COBRA museum. Private and public collections including work by Eliza are among others the Yellow Fellow Foundation (collection Verhoeven), Royal KPN, Royal PostNL, Cosmopolitan Hotel Las Vegas and Museum Het Valkhof. In 2018 a monograph was published covering many examples of her paintings, reliefs, drawings and mixed media works.

  • Nocturnal Parts - abstract geometric contemporary modern painting relief
    Located in Doetinchem, NL
Nocturnal Parts is a unique one-of-a-kind contemporary modern painting relief by Dutch artist Sander Martijn Jonker. It is a relief consisting of two open spherical parts with an intriguing matte black finish, perhaps a bit mysterious but very beautifully made. It can be hanged in two different ways, with the opening between the two spherical elements either facing away or facing the observer. Depending where the light comes from one might decide for the one or the other hanging method. Sander Martijn Jonker (1977, Netherlands) graduated from the St. Joost School of Art & Design in Den Bosch, The Netherlands. He primarily makes three-dimensional reliefs that play with the tension between abstraction and representation, surface and space. Light, shadow and their elusive ever-changing properties play an important role. Although the resulting works are abstract, he uses everyday reality as a starting and/or reference point. His work is created through forms of manipulation, distortion, repetition and simplification. Some works arise from the repetition of a simple movement or form, others are made by exploring how far he can go with the deformation and manipulation of the material, after which he captures and preserves the shape. He experiences daily life as uncontrollable and at times confusing. In order to cope with that, he is always looking for patterns and has gradually developed various rituals and ways of control, hoping they can offer him certainty and reassurance. His work and person are inextricably connected. He makes the things he makes because he doesn’t have a choice. He is trying to get a grip...
