About

Created in spontaneous bursts of concentration, off-cuts of fabric and found and painted paper pieces have accumulated during the development of larger, more orchestrated works. Paper and cloth are cut, arranged and edited in ordered and chaotic ways. They are akin to an instrumental chord: taken in at a glance. The emotive quality strikes one immediately with a limited evolution keeping that sensation fresh. The subtle time development feels akin to a musical chord. Minute changes in color, area, edge shape, orientation can either enhance or destroy the unique emotive resonance. Because background is so important to the reading of the piece, many subtly different arrangements are investigated. Elizabeth Gourlay earned her MFA at Yale University School of Art and her BA from Edinburgh College of Art. Her work has been shown extensively throughout the United States and she is the recipient of numerous residencies, fellowships and awards including 2 Individual Artists Grants from the CT Office of the Arts, invited Artist in Residence at the studio of Sol LeWitt in Spoleto, Italy and invited Juror and Visiting Artist to Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. Gourlay’s work has been written about in The New Criterion, Painters’ Table and many other publications. Her work is shown nationally and internationally including at MASS MoCA, The National Academy and School of fine Arts, the Cummings Arts Center at Connecticut College, the Hecksher Museum and the Widener Gallery at Trinity College, and at the Drawing Center in New York City. She teaches Applied Color and Painting & Abstraction in Continuing Ed at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and 2D Design and Abstract Painting & Color at The Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts. “Elizabeth Gourlay explores the dynamic interplay between color and form in abstract paintings that have extraordinary power. The bold geometry, such as the mesmerizing repetition of a horizontal grid, may draw you in, but the small details, the suggestions of inadvertent imperfections, demand your attention. Gourlay brings an exacting rigor to the process of revealing subtle undercurrents of visual dissonance, and these surprising notes—an accent of deep red against a backdrop of moody gray, or a jagged edge of cerulean blue—elevate her work beyond simple beauty into something far more complex. There is a distinctive contrast between what at first glance appears to be Gourlay’s straightforward, if gorgeous, paintings and the emotional charge that her deliberate constructions of line and color create. And that’s exactly the point. Past masters of minimalism, from Anni Albers to Piet Mondrian to Agnes Martin—all of whom Gourlay cites as important influences—focused on reducing artistic elements to their essential form. Gourlay’s work demonstrates, as theirs did, that an elusive narrative isn’t any less evocative. In fact, the freedom to interpret the meaning behind any work of art allows for the most intimate of connections.”
