About the Item

Contemporary mixed media and pastel on paper of a golden sun like orb by Belgian artist Francis Besson, signed bottom right. In plain contemporary oak frame. Francis was born in Dundee (Scotland) in 1943 however as a young child moved to Belgium where he later became famous as an actor. His family kept a second home in Cotignac in Provence which he visited often until finally going to live there himself in the early 2000's. Francis Besson now lives and works in the beautiful village of Cotignac in Provence in the south of France. His often impressionistic almost pointillist work is inspired by the nature he sees around him in this lovely part of the world. The intensity of the light , the rocks and forests of Provence all feature in his paintings. He is known for both landscapes and abstract works and has often collaborated with other local artists.

  • Scandinavian Danish Modernist Abstract Watercolour, Akvarel.
    Located in Cotignac, FR
Scandinavian Modern abstract watercolour on paper by Hans Øllgaard. The work is signed in full and dated bottom left. There is an exhibition label to the back panel and a gallery stamp. The painting is presented in a modern silvered frame under glass with a cut card mount. A vivid and colourful painting full of energy and movement. Very distinctive of Øllgaard's abstract style in the 1930s and to which he returned in the 1960s. We can feel the influences of his friends and fellow artists Max Ernst, Jean Arp, Vasily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Jean Miro, Piet Mondrian and Yves Tanguy. A striking and powerful work by an important artist of his day. Hans Øllgaard, knew early on that he wanted to be a painter. After graduating in 1929 he began his studies, but as he was too young to attend the Academy of Fine Arts he became a private pupil of Aksel Jørgensen, who also became his professor at the academy, where he began in 1933. Although he benefited greatly from teaching early on he developed his own distinctive style. Øllgaard quickly detached himself and sought connection with some of the first abstract Danish artists, Ejler Bille, Vilhelm Bjerke Petersen and Richard Mortensen...
