Untitled Oil painting 34' x 20' inch by Justin Bower
34" x 20" inch
Oil on canvas
2019
Justin Bower paints his subjects as de-stabilized, fractured post-humans in a nexus of interlocking spatial systems. His paintings problematize how we define ourselves in this digital and virtual age while suggesting the impossibility of grasping such a slippery notion.
The ongoing decoding of the human body, a formula to each individual’s genome, confronts us with a radical question of “What are we? Am I a code that can be reduced and multiplied infinitely?” Bower’s paintings begin to open a dialogue to this destabilizing effect/trauma technology has on the individual that has infected the daily lives of contemporary man. He shows this destabilization through the doubling of features - multiple eyes, spliced noses, melting mouths - and the whiplash motion invoked in his Abstract Expressionist process.
Much like Francis Bacon and Da Vinci of generations past, Bower uses paint as an instrument of dissection and inquiry. Flesh acts as a complex veneer, functioning as a biological boundary from externalized technologies; all the while the viewer realizes that the same externalized technologies are always already inside the subject. This ultimately creates an open system, an incomplete subject becoming and degrading, not knowing where the outside starts and the internal ends. The boundaries of the traditional subject are now leaking in Bower’s concept.
His paintings reflect the increasing “control society” that we find ourselves in. By placing his turbulent subjects in an Op Art context, the familiar repeating patterns that were used to engage the eye in the 60’s, are now being deployed to act as a type of “code” permeating and invading the body/subject. Bower wants to “have the viewer feel the instability his subjects reflect”, by playing on the non-fixed features of the face and the hallucinatory effects of the Op Art, so as to engage the viewer and perhaps awaken them from a techno-slumber.
In the end, Bower’s subjects are an inquiry into the nature of autonomy in the modern subject. Is “free will” minimized in a society that deploys technology in an effort for more and more control over the individual? Have we ever really had it to begin with? Bower paints his subjects as an ontological problem, and as such, he sees...”the study of subjectivity functions best under the threat of vanishing”.
Born in San Francisco in 1975, Bower earned a degree in Art and Philosophy from the University of Arizona in 1998 and a Master of Fine Arts from Claremont Graduate University in 2010.
Since graduating from CGU, Bower’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Ace Gallery Beverly Hills (2010) and Unix Gallery in New York City (2013 & 2015).
The artist has won and been nominated for several grants and awards, among them The Feitelson Fellowship Grant (2010) and The Joan Mitchell award (2010).

'I'll Be Back, ' by XVALA, Mixed Media Painting
By XVALA
Located in Oklahoma City, OK
'I'll Be Back,' by XVALA is a mixed media painting and colorful screen print with iridescent oil stick painting featuring the theme of the 'New World Order.' It was produced in 2015/16. The phrase 'I'll Be Back' is printed on the top and bottom margins of the work with the words 'New World Order' on the top margin. Three heads are stacked in the center of the canvas with the 'all seeing eye' on the top of the head.
XVALA's art illuminates the hidden fallout spawned from our high tech Internet age. His 'Fear Google' campaign exposed the decay of privacy and 'No Delete' used hacked nude celebrity photos to highlight loss of control over personal information. The artist has worked with trash from the homes of Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, and others, as well as dirt from the graves of George Orwell and Aldous Huxley. The dirt appears in the New World Order collection as part of a pyramidal, 3D printed, living ant farm...

Leader and Followers
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
"Leader and Followers" is a visually striking piece of art that immediately captures the viewer's attention. The artwork, which was created using a combination of oil colors, features a central figure standing tall and confident, representing the "Leader." Surrounding this central figure are several smaller figures, representing the "Followers."
Azeez's "Leader and Followers" is a profound allegory that explores the complex dynamics between leaders and their followers in society. The central figure, portrayed as powerful and charismatic, serves as a representation of leadership. This character appears larger than life, evoking a sense of authority and control.
The surrounding smaller figures represent the followers, who, in contrast, appear diminutive and fragmented. Their faces are obscured, and their bodies are twisted and contorted, symbolizing the idea that followers may often lose their individuality and autonomy in their pursuit of leadership. Azeez seems to suggest that leaders can exert a significant influence over their followers, shaping their thoughts, behaviors, and even identities.
"Leader and Followers" challenges viewers to reconsider their assumptions about leadership and followership. It raises questions about the responsibilities of leaders, the agency of followers, and the potential for both positive and negative outcomes when these roles intersect.
Azeez's work invites us to reflect on the role of leadership in shaping society. It prompts us to ask whether leaders should be held accountable for the actions and choices of their followers. It also encourages us to consider the ethical implications of the power that leaders wield over their followers.

About Artist
Abiodun Nafiu Azeez is an accomplished artist with a diverse background in contemporary painting, particularly Osogbo art. However, his true passion lies in abstract expression, where he seeks to promote African art, culture, and nature. Influenced by his artist father, he paints to preserve memories and connect with broader societal concerns.
Abiodun's artistic style is characterized by the abstraction and simplification of human compositions. He employs vibrant oil colors, often focusing on primary colors that transition into secondary and tertiary hues. His subjects stand out against neutral backgrounds, creating a harmonious balance in his paintings. A prominent feature in his works is the use of red, blue, and yellow tones, subtly blended to emphasize form and shape.
His artistic journey includes training under renowned bead painting contemporary artist Jimoh Buraimoh...
