About the Item
The Upend is a monochromatic, textured oil painting by James Austin Murray. It is an all black oil painting on wood panel. It is 36x36, square It is a stunning abstract painting that continues to shift and move with the light.
James Austin Murray is a minimalist New York artist. He has been exhibiting his work throughout the US since 1992. According to Murray:
"The focus in my paintings is all light. They have a reflective nature that interacts with the light around them. This makes the work subtly interactive with their environments. Black absorbs the full spectrum of light and what we have left is pure reflections of color….I'm compelled to make these paintings by my interest in light and movement, in the paint itself, and the color and character of reflective light….At times I work off-square. I let the shapes influence the paint and give it both a parameter to play with and work within.
The color black, the subject of my painting, is all absorbing. It’s the hungriest of colors sucking all the visible spectrum into itself. The benefit of black is not only that it’s so deep, but the fact that paint is a pigment suspended in a binder. Oil pure black paint absorbs the light spectrum and is also reflective. To me these paintings are not about the dark, as some have wondered aloud. They are about the light they reflect. I find them full of light and strangely bright for being black paintings."
He is a recipient of the Dedalus Foundation Fellowship Award for residency at The Vermont Studio Center, VT and has completed residencies at The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild in Woodstock, NY and Bermis Center for Contemporary Art in Omaha, NE. His work is in private and public collections around the world including Sofitel (Philadelphia, PA), Hotel Palomar (Philadelphia, PA), Four Seasons Hotel (Washington, D.C.), Omni Hotel (Nashville, TN) and Tom Ford (Designer).

- Abstract Flowers Oil Painting Study for AmaryllisBy Nobu FukuiLocated in Surfside, FLThis piece is done in a sort of sgraffito technique with the flowers sort of etched in the paint. Born in Tokyo, Japan, Nobu Fukui Came to New York where he became a US citizen. From 1964 - 65, he studied at the Art Students League in New York City. His work has been widely exhibited in New York and California. He had his first one-man show in this country in 1965 at the Daniels Gallery in New York. That same year his works were included in the Japanese Artists in Europe and America Exhibition at the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. This was followed by numerous exhibits and one-man shows in various cities in the United States and Japan - New York, Indianapolis, Ann Arbor, Pittsburgh and Yokohama, for example. Fukui's works are formal, dynamic and abstract. Form functions minimally as a symmetrical structure so as to focus on his real interest in color interaction. - Two Apples: abstract still life interior painting of red apples on pink & grayBy Mat TomezskoLocated in Bryn Mawr, PAThis is an original still life interior painting of fruit (apples) with a geometric fractured composition. The artist made the painting one section at a time. When working on one section, the artist would block off the rest of the composition so the objects and background needed to be placed again. By building the composition this way, the background and table appear at different levels and the shapes don't quite align. These imperfections convey a sense of passing time. In each section, the tone of the light changes, and the shadows switch directions. The apples and geometric shapes were chosen as much for metaphorical value as for aesthetics. A seemingly simple arrangement in a familiar painting genre contains a depth of observation, artistic choices, and interpretation. This painting is signed and dated on the back. Includes all hanging hardware and ready to install; no need for additional framing. Mat...Category
