This work is from a series of works on paper exhibited in the solo show: “The Temperature of Light” at Kean University, NJ 2015.
Inspired by the ancient ceramic glaze of Jade Green pottery known as the Age of Celedon, the nuance of celedon is here explored within the refractive spectrum.
The images Yntema creates are the result of accumulated, semi-translucent layers of color.
The beeswax gives a dimensional quality to whatever surface she paints on. Despite the buildup of layers, the qualities of the wax also imbue an ephemeral lightness to the pictures, as light is allowed to pass through the top layer to illuminate the layers beneath. The process of creating these pictures is slow and deliberate, and that sense of the building up of time is important to the work.
Yntema is inspired by the way light interacts with the natural landscape. She uses color and space as a way of examining light.
Janise Yntema is an American abstract painter currently living and working in Brussels, Belgium.
She works with the ancient technique of encaustic wax, a combination of beeswax, resin and pigments in which heat serves as the active solvent.
Yntema’s visual language is inspired by how light, perceived through pigment, creates space in combination with how perceptions of time can be retained through colour.
Her work references Postmodern Tonalism.
Her paintings bring to question the line between figuration and abstraction as within the visual language of the horizontal, a sense of place is suggested.
Her paintings are concerned with what is perceived as real comparative to the ideal, an examination into the larger reality of nature and life.
Yntema extensive exhibition history includes solo and group shows in London, New York City, Brussels, and Amsterdam. Recent solo exhibitions include Le Paysage Tranquille at Galerie Marie Demange, Brussels, in 2016, and The Quiet Landscape, at Cadogan Contemporary, London, UK, in 2015.
Her work is included in numerous public and private collections, including that of the Philips Corporation, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.

- Daily Drawing Series - 40 Days, original drawings, large scale installationBy Francie HesterLocated in New York, NYThe discipline of creating a drawing each day is a process, like a written diary, to clear the mind, to declutter thoughts, and to observe patterns. It is a method that allows the mind a freedom to wander and drift. A visual journal becomes a safe space for personal reflection–a self-awareness fueled by the opportunity for contemplation and immersion. The painted surface for the drawings was created by dividing five large paintings into 40 separate pieces. I chose five paintings from my Perspective Series (1993-94), which relied on day-to-day imagery that narrated a story about shifting time and how time anchors our day. The brush strokes of Perspectives are fluid, with muted colors – moving from deep blacks to taupe whites. Dividing these pieces was a means for me to rethink ideas and recurring images in my older work. The very thin gold leaf applied to each piece has a wonderful amber tone. This gold leaf is from Myanmar, where it is used as decoration for Buddha or for the dome of a temple or monastery. In the drawings, the gold element relates to the sense of infinity – like the sky in an enclosed courtyard. An architectural element is a critical component in my studio work that I wanted to carry over into these pieces. I envisioned a courtyard–a safe space that opens up to the sky. Unfolding circles define the beginnings of an open interior space. The process felt open-ended. It was an opportunity to get lost in thought and to give me an opportunity to reflect, muse and declutter my thinking. Then repeat. 40 days...Category
