About the Item

"Peach Stoned" is an original painting in mixed media by the Midwestern non-objective artist John Colt. Colt's paintings are often filled with small figures of insects and critters, but this work comes from a series that is more plainly abstract. The image is constructed of fields of color – primarily warm yellows and oranges – divided by subtly curving lines of green and freckles of brown. Indeed, as the title suggests, Colt appears to abstract a peach by taking an extreme close-up view of the fruit. This was a beloved technique for abstraction among artists of the twentieth century, as the curves and colors of fruit remind of the curves and sensuality of the human body. The artist signed this piece, with graphite, on the lower center edge of the painting. Then also on the reverse side in the upper left corner. There is also a label on the reverse, possibly from the McNeany store, Beloit WI. Housed in a frame of the artist's original design and construction. Overall good condition; some surface losses to frame; scattered marks to surface of painting; would benefit from cleaning. Artwork Size: 68" x 42" Frame Size: 68 3/4" x 42 3/4" Artist Bio: Milwaukee Artist John N. Colt taught at UW-Milwaukee from 1957 to 1990 when he retired as Professor Emeritus. He had continued the family’s artist tradition, as his father, Arthur Colt, had been teacher and mentor thru his decades-old Colt School of Art. John is often spoken of by his students with affection, and the many admirers of his paintings recognize his work as unique, singular without being quirky, eccentric or sweet. During his tenure at UWM, he also spent time as visiting professor at the American University in Beirut and the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, Northern Michigan University in Marquette and Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. John found his own language in terms of subject, technique…or if you prefer, language. Natural forms, barely discernible, sketched lightly and hidden within broad swathes of thinly washed bright color. Pond life, tide pools, moths and chameleon-like creatures, here and there some living thing stands out more boldly, or perhaps it is just a suggestion of that life form, a wing, an outline, a leg or antennae. Describing his own approach to creating art, he stated,” I’ve never been interested in the panoramic scene as much as I have the little areas - little realms of experience, nature close-up." He painted images of miniature land and sea creatures, dried fruits and vegetables; creating luminous effects and giving them an abstract quality with delicate lines and shapes. He found inspiration in his travels to the Oregon and California coasts, Mexico, the Bahamas and Haiti where he and his wife, artist Ruth Kajer, had a second home. The University of Wisconsin Union Gallery held a posthumous retrospective of John’s work, which closed on October 12th. Shown there were several bolder impasto paintings from the 50’s, and one transitional piece in particular, which points to his later, more ethereal, paintings in which the canvas is revealed thru the washes of paint. That canvas is more than a vehicle for paint. It becomes the sand, the water, the air in which John’s precious ephemeral creatures reside. The UWM exhibit organizers stated the following: "He is considered one of the most important Wisconsin artists of the 20th Century. It is my humble opinion that this statement is true, but that his soft diaphanous expressions set him outside most movements of the mid to late 20th Century." He had his own form of Magic Realism, one dependent on affection for the overlooked life forms which serve as metaphors for the state of existence on this planet. His soft brushwork and stained canvases, themselves vaporous and transparent, suggest the ephemeral nature of our time on this planet. John Colt's work has been widely exhibited and is represented in numerous private and museum collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY, the Milwaukee Art Museum, WI, the Wright Museum of Art, Beloit College, WI, Museum of Wisconsin Art, West Bend, WI, Munson-Williams – Proctor Institute, Utica, NY, Grand Rapids Museum, MI, Le Centre D’Art, Port Au Prince, Haiti, Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI, Teatro Mario, Milwaukee, WI, Burpee Museum, Rockford, IL, Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, WI and the UWM Art Museum Collection.
