John Richard Fox
Abstraction in Blue

1986

About

A sea of turquoise and kelp contained by a jetty of color washes into the picture plane of this large canvas by Montreal artist John Fox. The colors coalesce at a small circle cleft in two by light grey and periwinkle. The work is a celebration of sensation through color. Created in 1986, this painting closes a chapter in Fox's career as he moved towards figurative work. John Fox (1927-2008) attended McGill University, the École des Beaux-arts de Montréal and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, School of Art and Design. In 1952, he studied at the Slade School of Art, University of London, followed by two years in Florence and Paris. Fox spent time in Venice where his early work, inspired by European Intimism, gave way to large abstract canvases that explored the light-filled colours of the Mediterranean. Fox’s artwork is held in many private, corporate and public collections including the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, the MacKenzie Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Museum London, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the National Gallery of Canada, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. Untitled 1986 Framed 71.25 x 51.25 inches
