About the Item

Jonas Maas (born 1985 in Trier, lives in Dusseldorf) studied at the Kunsthochschule Mainz and at the Kunstakademie Dusseldorf in Germany. He graduated in the class of Turner-price recipient Tomma Abts. His works have been collected by major institutional and private collections (i.e. Federal Republic of Germany; kunstpalast, Dusseldorf; LBBW Stuttgart; Philara, Dusseldorf). His works are complex compositions on either wood or aluminum. Often, as in the case of "Untitled (Z 1)", these unique paintings (he does not do editions of these works) are in fact printed. Mostly, it is UV-print from documents that have been created with an image processing program (like, i.e. Photoshop). In these documents Maas treats digital data like a painter, starting with an empty "canvas", digitally manipulating abstract images. The computer program then serves as a brush. Often, he prints on gesso which has been applied on the surface randomly with a brush, leaving visible brushstrokes that can be seen, that do not, however, relate to the figurations and forms that have been printed. He is thus suggesting an artistic creation with brush and paint. However, „classical“ paintings, those that are created using paint and a paintbrush for applying color on a canvas, cannot be found in Maas‘ oeuvre. Maas is interested in highlighting the interaction of color and object in his abstract works and – as a result – in the analysis and redefinition of painting in our digital times. In the particular case of "Untitled (Z 1)", once you look closer, you see that he printed around 4 to 5 layers on the gesso that had been applied with a brush on the wooden surface. We do see several grids (each grid had been created with the image processing program) in several layers that have been - in the final document - printed one upon the other in 4 to 5 printing steps. These grids allude to readability and remind us of grids of large US-cities, if we look closely. If we see the whole image, though, we seem to see a kind of readable handwriting, as if someone had written on a fogged window pane. However, they remain abstract inventions by the artist.
