Juan Gomez Quiroz
Bodegon #25 Large Still Life Painting

1980

About the Item

Bodegon #25 Large Still Life Painting Artist signed, titled and dated. Second set of photos are in a natural day light. Chilean painter and graphic artist Juan Gomez Quiroz. His concern is in breaking with what he refers to as the naivety of realism and the artist’s caprice. He describes his work as “embodying a complete epistemological break with the Euclidean-Cartesian view of space and their modes of representation.” Juan Gomez-Quiroz builds his own structures, making their contours reflect the dictation of different mathematical functions while preserving the reality of the image. In the curves of the canvas, Gomez-Quiroz anchors his topological nudes, portraits, and other statements in art; which is to say, the curves of the canvas give us different points of view while preserving its representational character. Through these representational curves, Gomez-Quiroz is redefining the nature of the art object as one capable of embodying its own system of unique rules and forces while unearthing a universal, and previously unintended, facet of the world and the way we perceive it. To understand how Gomez-Quiroz has altered the objective status of a painting, one must analyze his resolve for creating a new language of visual thinking—one that relies on mathematics to provide the syntax of matter and brings life to Gomez-Quiroz’s language of art. Juan Manuel Gomez-Quiroz (1939 - 2021) was born in Santiago, Chile, and began his formal art studies there. A painter as well as a printmaker, he studied at the Gregorio de la Fuente workshop in 1956 and the following year enrolled at the School of Fine Arts, University of Chile. In 1962 he received a Fulbright Scholarship and traveled to study at the Rhode Island School of Design and Yale University's School of Art and Architecture.. He held positions in the Department of Art at New York University from 1969 to 1976, and the Museum of Contemporary Spanish Art in New York from 1990. He also served as director of Writer's Space at Hostos Community College, City University of New York. Eventually, Gomez-Quiroz settled in New York, studied at the Pratt Graphic Center, and was an adjunct professor of art at NYU (New York University) from 1969 to 1976 and also taught at FIT's (Fashion Institute of Technology) Printmaker Workshop. In 1986, he became a curator at the Museum of Contemporary Hispanic Art, and he was a member of the jury at the Olympic Arts Competition. His work was greatly influenced by Abstract Expressionism and the techniques and principles of Action Painting which dominated the art world in the 1950s. He had numerous solo exhibitions in South America, Europe, Canada, Puerto Rico and the United States. His work is in the permanent collection of: Solomon Guggenheim Museum, NYC; Metropolitan Museum of Art; NYC Museum of Modern Art; NYC De Menil Collection; Houston, TX; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; Brooklyn Museum, NYC; Bronx Museum of Art; NYC Cincinnati Art Museum,OH; Center for Inter-American Relations, NYC; The Chase Manhattan Bank; Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, NY; Museo de Bellas Artes, Santiago, Chile; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA; Museo de Arte Contemporaneo, Santiago, Chile; New York Public Library, NYC; New York University Art Collection, NYC; University of Massachusetts Amherst, MA; Cornell University, NY; Instituto de Cultura Puertorriquena, Puerto Rico; Instituto de Cultura, Lima, Perú.

  • Still Life Pink Roses
    Located in Delray Beach, FL
Pink Roses Oil on canvas, artist signed. At an early age Lisa began to draw and paint images of the lush Korean countryside. She loved the colors and beauty of nature. Lisa enjoys painting still-life floral bouquets; water lilies and the colorful countryside of European landscapes with fields of sunflowers, lavender and poppies are some her favorite subject matters. Her use of color is excellent and her technique involves the use of pallet knife work with thick brushstrokes and paint on canvas. This adds a tremendous amount of depth to her original landscape and still-life paintings. She has won over 7 awards and honors in the National Student Fine Art Competition in Seoul, Korea. She is a Recipient of the Special Prize at both the Competition of Fine Art at Hong-Ik University and the Korean Women Fine Art Exhibition at Sejong Cultural Center, Korea. Lisa is a member of the Korean Fine Art Association, and the Korean Women Oil Paintings Association. Her artwork has been in many exhibitions such as the Korean Modern...

  • Tulips in red and yellow in Red Vase -21st Century Realistic Flower Painting
    By Joran van der Haar
    Located in Nuenen, Noord Brabant
Joran van der Haar Red vases with Tulips 120 x 120 cm ( framed 130 x 130 cm, frame is included in price) oil on canvas The realistic painted "17th century style' bouquets by Joran van der Haar, are always an eye-catcher in our gallery. The colorful bouquets look natural but have a long history of months of meticulous and layered work. It is sometimes difficult to predict when Joran's work can withstand its own "test of criticism". In addition, the layered work with oil paint sometimes also ensures long drying times. Shortening this is undesirable. In 2014 the artist started experimenting and painting with oil paint, flowers and insects soon turned out to be his preference. Again, this was a source of inspiration. The artist about his work: ‘In the Rijksmuseum and Mauritshuis I found the still lifes of Jan Davidsz. de Heem, Jan van Huysum and Ambrosius Bosschaert...

  • Champagne Glasses
    By Inkyeong Baek
    Located in New York, NY
Sensational paintings of glass vessels come to life in this dynamic exhibition featuring new works by Korean artist Inkyeong Baek. Demonstrating an uncanny ability to capture her subject-matter, Baek’s enchanting oil paintings glitter with a gemstone-like quality that truly captivates. The material characteristics of glass are fickle, often visually elusive. Yet each work on display beautifully illustrates, in stunning, hyper-realistic detail, an array of objects, from champagne flutes to whisky tumblers. Take the large-scale painting, Rocks Glasses; here we see an assortment of vessels arranged in a triangle– refracted light dances across the intricate terrain of cut-glass crystal, resulting in an ethereal azure-tinted glow that mesmerizes the viewer. In the work Champagne Glasses...
