Joffe's career spans the post-World War II Abstract Expressionist movement to the present. She is known for her powerful images of women and horses, often intertwined, and representing reciprocal ideas of power, grace and beauty. Indeed, one NYT critic said that she returned the beauty and grace to the female form that De Kooning had taken away. Embraced by the first generation of Abstract Expressionist painters on the East End of Long Island, she represented a link to central figures in the avant-garde of 20th century American art, including such artists as Willem De Kooning (she was a studio assistant), Philip Pavia, Ibram Lassaw, John Little and Balcomb Greene. She did Tai Chi with Elaine De Kooning on the beach in East Hampton. She exhibited nationally in galleries and museums, showing alongside artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Eric Fischel, Linda Benglis...

She enjoyed taking a close-up look at the works, many of which were by artists she had known personally. Mr. Ehrenhalt loved those trips. The museum guards not so much. "She would get very close to the art and point out details and techniques, her finger getting close," her son said. The guards would rush over and issue the don't touch warning." Amaranth Ehrenhalt was a multifaceted artist best known for her paintings. She was part of the second generation of Abstract Expressionists, working first in New York in the early 1950s, and then in Paris for much of the rest of her career. Never afraid to experiment, Ehrenhalt's work may best be described as bold, even aggressive, in execution, composition and even color. She worked across media, including oils, works on paper, prints and etchings, tapestry, design and sculpture. Amaranth Ehrenhalt died on March 16, 2021 in Manhattan. She was 93. The cause was Covid-19. Ehrenhalt moved to Paris early in her career and settled there as an expatriate artist for the next forty-odd years. The present work of art titled "Urban Abstraction (ripped off posters)" is part of a series of paintings that the artist composed in the 1980s and 1990s inspired by the observation of the urban reality of those years. The artist take the cue from his walks in Florence, both in the center and in the suburbs, and by the observation of billboards and posters scattered throughout the city. The mass of information, colors, messages and words were carried on the canvas with acrylic colors, ideally reconstructing the tears and overlaps of all the information and advertising contained on these huge sheets of paper that invade our cities.
