Julia Contacessi
In 2000, Julia Contacessi earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Pratt Institute in New York City. Over the years, her eye for composition coupled with her love of painting, design and photography has earned Contacessi numerous awards in such publications as Photographer's Forum and Creativity along with inclusion into the Robert B. Haas Family Arts Library Special Collections (ALSC) in New Haven, Connecticut. Julia never strayed far from texture, paint and the mixing and layering of mediums, which are important components to her work. Her most recent abstracts focus on deconstructing painted color palette studies through isolated images and then rebuilding those studies with new form and composition. She lives in Norwalk, Connecticut, with her husband and son. She spends most weekends tackling new projects and getting into all sorts of adventures with her little guy, Neo. She loves painting and photography, the occasional five-mile run and feisty discussions across the family dinner table on Sunday evenings.
- "Restless Sea, " Contemporary Abstract PaintingBy Teodora GuererraLocated in Westport, CTThis contemporary abstract statement painting by Teodora Guererra is made with acrylic and oil paint on canvas. It features a coastal palette, with layers of paint applied in wide, sweeping gestures, layering varying shades of blue over one another. The painting is signed by the artist on the back of the canvas, and is wired and ready to hang. Teodora Guererra’s abstract artistic vision has evolved throughout her years spent painting and teaching in Fairfield County, Connecticut; Tucson, Arizona, and upstate New York. Arizona’s naturally radiant landscape and arid climate led her to experiment with rich under-painting and vivid color; while the shifting seasons of the East Coast inspired Guererra to pursue dripping and staining techniques. Her focus has always been pushing the limits through experimentation with new materials. “As an artist, painting can be tormenting and sublime at the same time," the artist says of her work. "I'm a big risk taker, experimenting with different materials to layer, stain and saturate color on large canvases. My most successful work looks as if it happened all at once. It sometimes takes 7 or more paintings to produce a successful one and then it's a beautiful thing." Guererra received her undergraduate and graduate Art degrees from Southern Connecticut University, The College of Saint Rose and Skidmore College. Guererra’s paintings can be found in public and private collections across the U.S., including the Allmen Health and Wellness Center for Women in New York and SUNY Brockport, NY, William & Sonoma, San Francisco, CA. Her influences are Pat Steir, John McCracken, Helen Frankenthaler, Donald Jud, Bernar Venet, Agnes Martin and Brian Rutenberg...Category

- Palavra #3By Paulo CanilhasLocated in Brooklyn, NYI am fascinated by the individual’s relationship within society. It is in this context that I exist. Along the beaten path, I allow myself to observe from a multitude of vantage points; towards the recent past or a future yet to occur. This is what inspires me- the creative moment yet to happen, laden with limitless possibilities. When I take a look at the past, I identify social and personal nuances and their direct influence on my work, and then with excitement look for what comes next. In this process I take distance from myself and view with a critical eye. Ever evolving, I search for more. I am neither a painter nor sculptor, much less a photographer or director, but I am a little bit of everything. I don’t feel bound to one specialized art form, and this allows me to navigate free and unencumbered by norms and expectations. My goal is not to achieve perfection in any one area, but rather to explore all disciplines- joyfully challenging myself, provoking and exploring beyond any pre-conceived limits. In my work I try to establish a connection between my reality and the reality of those who dedicate a few minutes of observation. I’m constantly searching for the vanishing point that gives diverse expression to my artistic production. This is the creative fuel that drives me ever forward. Paulo Canilhas...Category
