About the Item

Jung Min Hee expresses the artist’s psychological experiences in life with free-spirited brushstrokes and intense energy of color. Her work is a visual expression of a way to overcome the alienation experienced in daily life in the capitalist social structure. Jung observes how social relationships and structures are spatially interpreted as a way to overcome anxiety in a space of alienation. Observation leads to acts of ‘taking a walk’ and ‘collecting everyday objects’. Jung collects artificial nature, that is, natural patterns seen in the forests of city parks. The pattern seems to be constant or sometimes disordered and connected, but it turns out to be disconnected due to the limited ecosystem of the city. The patterns of nature that are repeatedly seen in the gaps found in the forest and at the points where they are connected and disconnected are captured on the canvas with powerful brushstrokes. Jung Min Hee describes this act as ' a performance', and explains that the non-daily space found by newly discovering unfamiliar things in the space help her to overcome the alienation and the anxiety “I create a virtual garden space as if cultivating a garden by enlarging and reducing the insufficient nature created in the capitalist social structure. In this social structure, I contemplate on what ‘being useful' is, whether it is truly useful to create 'a work of art' as an artist, and the use of things that are sacrificed, alienated, and abandoned for that ‘use’. In the reality of anxiety, I continue the act of finding something between ‘the useful’ and ‘the useless.’ Jung Min Hee graduated from the Department of Oriental Painting at Hansung University and the Department of Western Painting at Hansung University. She has held a number of solo and group exhibitions at art museums and galleries in Korea, including Gyeomjae Jeongseon Museum of Art, Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, Seojin Art Space, and Incheon Culture and Arts Center. The present work of art titled "Urban Abstraction (ripped off posters)" is part of a series of paintings that the artist composed in the 1980s and 1990s inspired by the observation of the urban reality of those years. The artist take the cue from his walks in Florence, both in the center and in the suburbs, and by the observation of billboards and posters scattered throughout the city. The mass of information, colors, messages and words were carried on the canvas with acrylic colors, ideally reconstructing the tears and overlaps of all the information and advertising contained on these huge sheets of paper that invade our cities. The geometric lines are overlaid with jagged lines, overlaps and color dripping and also the choice in the color palette, with different shades of white, gray, rose, orange red and blue helps in rendering the result of the tears and ripped paper. The result is a beautiful multicolored modern abstract canvas, both aesthetically and ethically, with many rich layers of color, texture and expression in which the artist leaves his own message. The painting is housed in a simple modern white lacquer wood frame. Andrea Spinelli...
