About the Item
Black and White Triptych - Textural Abstract Minimalist Composition
Minimalist textural composition by Karen M. Shimoda (American, b. 1951). Each piece has a different texture, surface treatment, and level of darkness. The white piece has a silvery quality to the dark parts, with a transparent glaze on top. The middle, grey piece preserves some of the woodgrain texture from the panel. The darkest piece has a medium mixed in, creating a sandpaper-like texture with a slightly metallic quality.
The white piece is signed and dated "Karen M Shimoda 2011"
Each piece measures ~10" square, and is a "cradled" panel.
No frames, but these pieces are intended to be hung as-is.
Karen Shimoda (American, b. 1951) was born in Los Angeles, CA. Shimoda took art classes while working toward her BA in Art History at Manhattanville College, NY and her two MA degrees from Colombia University in Art History and East Asian Studies. She draws her aesthetic from the rhythms and patterns of nature, poetry, literature, and music.
Shimoda exhibited in Museum of Montana's Montana Triennial. In 2011, she had a two-person show at a gallery in Missoula and a residency at Jentel in Banner, WY. Her solo exhibition, Field Notes, was presented at MAM and 2017 and at the new Whitney Center for the Arts in Sheridan, Wyoming, September 2017. Shimoda lives in Portland, Oregon, making art full time.

- "Ghosts" - Abstract Composition in Acrylic, Oil, and Ink on Cradled Wood PanelLocated in Soquel, CA"Ghosts" - Abstract Composition in Acrylic, Oil, and Ink on Cradled Wood Panel Dramatic abstract composition by Michele King (American, b. 1962). This piece resembles a nebula, with swirling texture and subtle variations in color. Although the piece appears to be mostly black, there are a variety of colors that peek through the top layer. A layer of high gloss varnish creates a nearly iridescent quality to the piece, and the colors shift subtly depending on the viewing angle. Signed "Michele King" on verso. No frame, but the edges are painted for a frame-less display. Board size: 24"H x 24"W Michele King (American, b. 1962) was born in Cleveland, Ohio and moved to California in the 1990s. She attended Virginia Tech and Harvard, where she earned her MPA. She pursued graduate studies at the Glasgow School of Art in 2013. Her work is focused on “memory, the future, and ways in which perception is shaped through a combination of reality and imagination.” King’s process involves layering of various media, creating depth and texture. - "Ab-scrap" - Abstract Geometric Composition in Acrylic on Wood PanelLocated in Soquel, CA"Ab-scrap" - Abstract Geometric Composition in Acrylic on Wood Panel Dynamic abstract composition by Sam Dantone (American, b. 1971). This piece was created as a part of the "Ab-scrap" series, where Dantone uses excess paint from his sign painting business to create new compositions. Whenever there is a little extra paint on a brush, Dantone would add it to a panel, slowly creating a new composition out of the leftovers from his other work. Thus, each piece contains a wide variety of colors and brushstrokes, and the echoes of other compositions. Signed "Sam Dantone" on verso. No frame. Board size: 20.75"H x 8.75"W Sam Dantone (American, b. 1971) is an artist from Oregon who works as a sign painter, designer, and sculptor. Artist’s Statement: “Not once in my life do I know a time when I have not been an artist. My father tells that I once copied the Kleenex logo from the side of the box, at age three. I tribute my abilities to naïve confidence and other’s positive attention. As a kid, drawing was magical . . . Though my art stylings vary widely, one thread stitches all of my work together, (my art) is my critique on man’s apparent love for life and his constant destruction of it.” Exhibitions: 2015 - FoundSpace, Jackson, WY 2013 - Pacific Park Gallery, Coos Bay...Category
