Kay Hartung
"Bio Bloom 9", abstract, microscopic, magenta, white, encaustic, pastel

2015

About the Item

Kay Hartung’s “Bio Bloom 9” is a delicate image of her interpretation of cell growth within the body. The 16 x 16 inch abstract painting, on 2 inch deep birch panel, is part of her series of encaustic paintings focused on microscopic imagery. Actual thread is embedded in the creamy white background of the piece, connecting the blooming forms in magenta, orange and chartreuse. The painting is unframed and signed by the artist on the reverse. Encaustic painting, a technique used by the ancient Greeks, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. Encaustic is among the most beautiful of all artists' paints, and is as versatile as any 21st century medium. Due to the fact that beeswax is impervious to moisture, encaustic is incredibly durable; it will not deteriorate, yellow, or darken over time, eliminating the need for protective varnish or glass. Kay Hartung is an artist interested in the intersection of art and science, particularly the microscopic world. Her work has been included in exhibitions throughout the country and is in both private and corporate collections. Hartung is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.
