Kay Hartung
"Cells Alive 3", abstract, migration, black, white, graphite, encaustic painting

2015

About the Item

Kay Hartung’s “Cells Alive 3” is a imagined scene of cell activity which creates a sense of the energy involved in the process of growth. In a limited palette of black and white, cellular forms flow across the painting suggesting rapid migration. The piece is 18 x 18 inches, on a cradled panel, unframed, and signed by the artist on the reverse. Encaustic painting, a technique used by the ancient Greeks, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. Encaustic is among the most beautiful of all artists' paints, and is as versatile as any 21st century medium. Due to the fact that beeswax is impervious to moisture, encaustic is incredibly durable; it will not deteriorate, yellow, or darken over time, eliminating the need for protective varnish or glass. Kay Hartung is a Boston, Massachusetts area artist interested in the intersection of art and science, particularly the microscopic world. Her work has been included in exhibitions throughout the country and is in both private and corporate collections. Hartung is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.
