About the Item

A small square abstract acrylic and ink painting - in the iconic Circle or Target design - on linen book cover by Kenneth Noland. The charming pink, yellow, and black target is from a series of original paintings on the artist's monograph by Kenworth Moffet, "Kenneth Noland," published in 1977 by Harry N. Abrams, New York. This monograph is number ten from an edition of fifty-five. The work is in very good condition, and comes with an elegant white frame. The work is hand-signed and dated by the artist. Kenneth Noland (American, 1924 - 2010) Untitled, 1977 Acrylic and ink on linen book cover 11 x 11 ½ x 1 ½ in. 11 ¾ x 12 x 2 ¼ in. framed Signed and dated lower left: Kenneth Noland 1977 Kenneth Noland was an influential and celebrated figure in the Color Field movement, developing one of the most distinctive bodies of work of any Color Field painter in his 70-year career. Noland was born in 1924 in Asheville, North Carolina, and served in the U.S. military during World War Two. Following the war, Noland used the G.I. Bill to study at Black Mountain College under the likes of Willem de Kooning and Josef Albers, developing a serious passion for painting. In the '50s, Noland adopted Helen Frankenthaler's use of the soak stain painting technique, abruptly abandoning his abstract expressionist style to work on his now famous Circle/Target paintings throughout the ‘50s and early ‘60s. In 1964, Noland was included in a Clement Greenberg exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, alongside Jules Olitski, Helen Frankenthaler, Ellsworth Kelly, Jack Bush, Frank Stella, and Morris Louis, among others. Greenberg dubbed this group’s work as “Post-Painterly Abstraction.” In that same year, Noland was selected for the "Four Germinal Painters” show at the United States Pavilion of the 32nd Venice Biennale. In 1985, Noland was appointed as the Milton Avery Professor of the Arts at Bard College. His work was widely exhibited during his lifetime, and remains in permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate Gallery, and the Zürich Kunsthaus.
