About the Item

Mercurial, 2020 54" x 78" Acrylic Abstract Painting on Canvas Signed Mercurial was painted on a large unstretched canvas taped to the wall and later stretched to its current size of 54x78. Without the visual boundaries of a stretched canvas, the Kim wanted to create a work using a fresh palette with the space and depth for the viewer to search within. Sweeping lyrical and soft gestural strokes, along with quiet spaces with accents of black line, allows the eye to roam around the painting and settle here and there, hopefully bringing a peaceful mindset. Connecticut based abstract Impressionistic painter, Kim Romero’s natural attraction to the relationship between colors and textures is not surprising given her thirty years of involvement in interior décor, food presentation and garden design. Her paintings grow out of visual personal experience; tactile and painterly pieces that illicit feelings and emotional triggers and connections that bring joy, promote thought and calm the mind. Kim’s process begins by using a large brush, palette knife and lots of acrylic paint. Using color arbitrarily or with a particular palette put together for the painting at hand, and using a bit of whimsy, she alternates between thick and pigmented or thin and watery textures, layering as the piece takes form, leaving bits of the former layer peeking through, adding to the history. The shapes created begin to take on the structure and “bones” of the work, as the technique continues. In each final composition, she hopes to capture and evoke the feelings and awareness specific to a personal memory or reflection. Since 2009, after some initial classwork at Silvermine Guild Art Center and having taken workshops under various artist mentors and teachers, the mostly self-taught artist has participated in many group art shows and exhibitions, as well as solo shows throughout Connecticut and New York. Her work is in many private collections throughout the country.

The present work of art titled "Urban Abstraction (ripped off posters)" is part of a series of paintings that the artist composed in the 1980s and 1990s inspired by the observation of the urban reality of those years. The artist take the cue from his walks in Florence, both in the center and in the suburbs, and by the observation of billboards and posters scattered throughout the city. The mass of information, colors, messages and words were carried on the canvas with acrylic colors, ideally reconstructing the tears and overlaps of all the information and advertising contained on these huge sheets of paper that invade our cities. The geometric lines are overlaid with jagged lines, overlaps and color dripping and also the choice in the color palette, with different shades of white, gray, rose, orange red and blue helps in rendering the result of the tears and ripped paper. The result is a beautiful multicolored modern abstract canvas, both aesthetically and ethically, with many rich layers of color, texture and expression in which the artist leaves his own message. The painting is housed in a simple modern white lacquer wood frame. Andrea Spinelli...
