“Rainbow Rose” is a one-of-a-kind classic work is not only a representation of the type of beauty I like to portray, but also the symbols and unique items that are meaningful to my creative practice. In the deepest part of my solitude in 2020, I was outside walking along the Hudson River in Manhattan, New York City where I stumbled upon a broken vase of colorful roses. Outside time and walks were some of my only ways to relieve me of the hardship brought on my the pandemic. The roses were so bright and colorful, yet curious. I was curious as to why someone would willingly dispose of a whole vase of roses and shatter it on the side of the river. Nevertheless, I took the roses and brought them home inside with me. The bouquet of roses brought so much color, light, and joy into my space; I really appreciated and enjoyed them. And then, as time and nature will have it, they dried and withered. I kept the roses because I was thankful for the beauty and joy that they brought into my solitude, and I thought of expressing my gratitude for them in one of the only ways I know – by turning them into artwork. Even when dried, I kept some remnants of the roses, ruminating what I would do to them, and little by little, I selected the most appealing remaining rose and salvaged as many petals as I could. Approximately one year later, I had completed “Rainbow Rose,” which is an example of my celebration of the beauty of nature, the color and dynamism that can be found in everyday objects as exposed by my art, and my gratitude for the effect that a bouquet brought to my life. Rainbow Rose has inspired and created a legacy of ongoing and future works, including an upcoming photography print, titled “The Making of Rainbow Rose.”

- Queen Victoria -- contemporary abstract painting & collage with figure & objectsBy Richard J. WatsonLocated in Bryn Mawr, PA"QUEEN VICTORIA" is created and from acrylic and found objects on round MDF panel. It includes a photograph of a figure, pocket knife, beads, charms, and other unidentified objects in metal and wood. It is signed and dated along the lower edge. PROVENANCE: Exhibited in "Portals + Revelations: Richard J. Watson," the African American Museum in Philadelphia, Oct 2021 - Mar 2022. "Most of my works are supported by memories of the past and suggested realities. Issues of social politics, ancestral references, and astral projections are presented with fragmented elements of 'real life' collaged and collapsed, as dreams are prone to do. If connections are made, all the better. I feel that life should remind us of our dreams." - Richard J. Watson Richard J. Watson is an icon in the Philadelphia art world. Much of his work relates to his experiences as a Black African American man. He is a graduate of Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1968), has taught at his alma mater, and has served in the Exhibitions Department at the African American Museum in Philadelphia since the 1980s. He has been exhibiting his work for decades, and has an extensive bibliography.
