Lorraine Lawson
'Sitting on Top of the World' - Mixed Media - Abstract Expressionism

2023

About the Item

"Sitting on Top of the World" by Lorraine Lawson is an evocative mixed media creation that explores the dichotomy of light and shadow through abstract expressionism. Spanning 36" x 36", this canvas is a textural symphony in muted and bold contrasts, with a central golden orb that symbolizes triumph and perspective. The use of stark black against a predominantly cream and white palette imbues the piece with a sense of gravity and depth, while the integration of newspaper clippings grounds it in reality, suggesting a narrative beneath the abstract. The rough, almost archaeological layers of media give rise to a contemplative stillness, as if the viewer is witnessing the silent crescendo of a world rising beneath them. It’s a powerful statement on the human condition—standing resilient against the vastness of existence. About the Artist: Lorraine Lawson's artistry lies at the intersection of the representational and the abstract, influenced by the transformative power of nature, culture, and architecture. Her work is an artistic tribute to the beauty of imperfection and the passage of time, drawing on the Japanese concept of Wabisabi to honor the beauty in the worn and broken. Lawson's abstract, textural paintings are rich with layers that evoke memories and a sense of place, achieved through innovative techniques with paint and encaustic mediums. Her practice involves a continual evolution of visual symbols and an exploration of techniques, all aimed at capturing the lyrical expressions of life's experiences. Her dedication to her craft is fueled by years of keen observation and a passion for expressing the profound narrative of life through her unique visual language. Original, 1-of-1. Available at the American Art Gallery, Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. Keywords: abstract, abstract expressionism, cream, black, white, Lorraine Lawson, mixed media, canvas, muted, newspaper

Provenance Compass Rose, Chicago Born Sylvan Irwin Goldberg in 1924 and raised in the Bronx, Michael Goldberg was an important figure in American Abstract Expressionism, who began taking art classes at the Art Students League in 1938. A gifted student, Goldberg finished high school at the age of 14 and enrolled in City College. He soon found New York’s jazz scene to be a more compelling environment, and he began skipping classes in favor of the Harlem jazz clubs near campus. Goldberg’s love of jazz would become a lifelong passion and a key component to his approach to composition in his paintings. From 1940 to 1942, like many of the leading artists of the New York School, Goldberg studied with Hans Hofmann. In 1943, he put his pursuit of painting on hold and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Serving in North Africa, Burma, and India, Goldberg received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star before being discharged in 1946. After his service, he traveled and worked in Venezuela before returning to the United States, settling back in New York and resuming studies with Hofmann and at the Art Students League. Living downtown and frequenting the Cedar Bar, Goldberg befriended many of the artists of the New York School. In 1951, his work was included in the groundbreaking Ninth Street Show, co-organized by Leo Castelli, Conrad Marca-Relli, and the Eighth Street Club, and featuring the work of - among others - Hofmann, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline. In 1953, the Tibor de Nagy...
