About the Item

Lowell Boyers (b. 1966) is a graduate of MFA program at Yale University and the Rhode Island School of Design (BFA). He has been living and working in New York City for over 30 years. “Journey without goal” is an extremely delicate and exotically beautiful piece rendered in shimmering acrylic paints, resin and ink on canvas. The painting portrays imaginary docks where vessels explode in transformative color, being birthed in scarlet and magenta flames that turn into wings. Lowell Boyers is fearless in his inclination to portray the movement from one condition to another, like seasons, or the bursting of a flower from a seed, the drama of transformation is unified in a beautiful operatic painterly expression. “I think that’s the subject of these paintings, suggesting some kind of transition to new beginnings, implying change, or fertile opportunity, some Becoming. The Innerscapes are skyscapes and watery expanses, Islands that have paths that stretch to the tip of fiery precipices… These forms come from the paint. I try to make an animated surface where the worlds I create can emerge from and disappear into the fertile swirly ground. Vessels ride these rippled expressions, they take wing, liberated in the wind, they are lit aflame…I think of the fire as wisdom, but it can be anything… And where are they journeying? These vessels? With each touch of my brush the painting moves to another condition, a drop of silver or red shifts something that demands another expressive movement…the vessels, like the artist and his painting, are traveling to or from another momentary condition.” This work is painted using adventurous processes of pouring paint, using countless diaphanous spills of paint and water, pulling imagery with and from the brushwork. His work seems akin to diverse foundational practices seen in 17th century Japanese screen painting, Chinese ink calligraphy or Modernist abstract expressionism and countless other artistic processes. The artist paints these works mostly flat, on a tabletop, the paintings hip high, and he hovers over them, initially not knowing top or bottom, no preliminary drawings, subjects, intent…Although, Boyers suggests “…that’s not wholly true...sometimes I think about a movement, an inner movement, outer movement and color, like a dancer preparing to twirl, to leap, I move as my mind moves.”
