About the Item

Magdalena Pela deals with the signs of everyday life. In her works, she refers to the category of palimpsest, blurring traces, illegibility. She is fascinated by the mystery of the physicality of a gesture and signature. It raises the question of what happens when the sense of writing escapes us, when letters - signs of everyday life - become ornaments, and a sequence of signs - writing becomes a material phenomenon in itself. Strings of characters get lost at the same time on the new, purely visual one. It poses a question about the limit of readability. There are sentences in the painting that he treats as waste of our digital reality: from messenger, text messages, emails, etc. That's why they are in capital letters. The artist refers more to their redundancy and accumulation than to the content. Magdalena Pela Is born in 1989 in Gdańsk. Visual artist, painter, author of objects. PhD student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. She graduated from the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk in 2015. A graduate of cultural studies at the Faculty of Philology of the University of Gdańsk (2011). At her alma mater, she works as an assistant at the Faculty of Painting and at the Faculty of Architecture and Design. Multiple winner and finalist of national and international painting competitions: laureate of the 7th National Exhibition of the Best Diplomas of the Academy of Fine Arts in Poland, 25th National Young Painting Review Promotions 2015 and the 3rd National Painting Competition. Leona Wyczółkowski 2018. Finalist of the 5th National Young Painting Review "Fresh Blood" and the competition for the Grand Prix of the Franciszki Eibisch Foundation 2015. Nominated for the Main Prize at the 13th National Exhibition of Unique Fabrics at the Central Museum of Textiles in Łódź and the final of the 3rd International Painting Competition of the Three Foundation Mosty 2018. In a Black Circle -Series Blobs, Contemporary Oil Painting, Colourful Expression
By Grzegorz Radecki
Located in Salzburg, AT
Artist about his work: BLOBS. THE CHARM OF DRIPPING PAINT Flowing peacefully in the slow current of a narrow trickle between the feeling of senselessness and some deeply hidden hope or – rather – the need for sense, my painting is closing a subsequent circle. It is one more effort to reach the core, the essence of the nature of light and colour which actually is the essence of the substance ascribed to the job to which the painter is doomed. What I have in mind is the paint flowing across the canvas – its liquid structure which, shaped sparingly by the will of a noble tool, as well as the force of gravity, sometimes happens to become a universal message. One can recognise this message by its sound, accompanied by one’s being particularly moved. Every very tiny particle, which has for years been made sensitive, begins to resonate in accordance with the harmony now appearing, while the seductive sound which accompanies it is capable of leading one into ecstatic vibration.
