About the Item
Mario Côté is a painter and video artist who is particularly interested in the intersection of art disciplines and of the individuals who practice them. His work has been widely exhibited in Canada, particularly in Quebec, as well as in Mexico, Germany, Spain, France and Sweden.
Between 1993 and 2000, Mario Côté colorful paintings explored the stylized representation of the electronic image before focusing on the emblematic figure of Russian experimental cinema that is Dziga Vertov. In recent years, Mario Côté’s pictorial work has focused on the visual transposition of soundscapes of urban spaces and, more recently, on the pictorial translation of musical works by the American composer Morton Feldman. As a painter, he seeks to confront the musical notation, which structures time, by inscribing it in a properly pictorial space occupied by brightly colored geometric and non-figurative signs.
