What Remains, Contemporary Abstract Landscape Painting

2022

About the Item

What Remains uses painting and elements of collage from found studio material such as strips of canvas and wax paper for added texture. This painting is intended to show the impacts of the environment on our land and the barren spaces that could soon exist because of it. The foreground is a thin tree somewhat broken and burnt and a deep red sun burning in the distance. The flat pictorial space straddles abstraction as well as vague representation of an unknown landscape. The landscape remains flat, barren, and strange, an abandoned space void of human presence, even extraterrestrial. This work is part of my new series of works that have been in progress since this past spring 2022. Each painting starts with a circle which can be interpreted as the viewer pleases, followed by a horizon line and various elements of the landscape.

  • Interference, Contemporary Abstract Oil Painting
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
In this piece, the intense use of negative space highlights each individual marks character, weight and texture. The painting explores various types of mark making and paint application inspired by elements of the landscape painted in various thicknesses, intensities and with a variety of different tools. Each mark is calculated and responsive to the one that came before it, creating a cause and effect relationship across the surface of the canvas. Restraint is a key element of this new body of work from artist Matt Higgins and the option to go further is always there. However, the excitement and spontaneity of the piece would therefore be sacrificed. Done in one session of intense meditative focus, A Place We Can See depends upon the exact moment of creation...
