About the Item

‘Hidden Void’ is a gestural abstract acrylic and mixed media on canvas painting created by American artist Max Lebven in 2016. Featuring a bright palette mostly made of red and blue, highlighted with yellow, turquoise and lavender accents, the composition is organized around the three white negative spaces with sinuous lines that methodically separate the various sections of the painting. The eye is immediately drawn to the areas marked by the deep red and blue colors, perfectly lightened by the splatter à la Jackson Pollock to whom Max vows a strong admiration. The ensemble is perfectly concluded by the sphere left in negative that gives the painting its title. The contrasting tones, combined with a harmoniously laid out composition, will make this gestural abstract painting a strong focal point in any home, whether placed as a single piece above a commode or side table, or in a vignette, accompanying the two of Max’s other paintings that were created at the same time: Evening Blue and Painted Dusk share the same splatter colors as Max was envisioning them placed together. One of the photos will show you the three pieces together. Unframed, this mixed media and acrylic on canvas piece is signed in the back (the scene continues on the sides). Max Lebven is an American born artist. His work is greatly influenced by the vibrant colors he grew up with in New England. People often ask Max Lebven “What was your motivation for that piece?” Lebven's guess is they’re expecting some deep philosophical discourse about how the piece is an homage to this person or a symbol of man’s struggle against that injustice or maybe a metaphysical expression of the dichotomy of life. The reality is, there’s none of that in Lebven's work. When Max approaches a canvas, it’s literally and figuratively a blank canvas. The truth is, he rarely begins a piece with an idea of what exactly it’s going to look like at the end. Although Lebven may have an idea of a stencil he wants to use or a mix of colors he would like to try, the reality is the piece reveals itself as he paints and the colors and strokes seem to beckon him as he goes along. Once Lebven gets started the work takes on a life of its own. At the end of the day, Lebven's motivation for his art is… Using colors and layers and lines to create something that strikes a chord with those who share his perspective, something that makes hearts smile and maybe skip a beat once in a while.
