About the Item
This is a piece from my "Body Abstraction" Series. It is a series I created during my MFA where I was interested in zooming in on the female body, my own body specifically, to focus on the textures, lines, and forms that occurred from this act of minute focus. By abstracting the body, I was able to focus on the medium of painting and revel in the joys of composition and materiality.
However, simultaneously almost contradictory, the symbolic nature of the lines themselves, which are inspired by my everyday observations of the struggles faced by women, is meant to echo the fight against social and legal forms of oppression. My paintings allow me to engage with these issues and add my own distinctive female voice to this collective, ongoing struggle.
I am the artist, Mel Reese. I hold an MFA in Fine Arts from SVA and have attended both the Elsewhere Studios and Vermont Studio Center residencies. I have had a number of solo exhibitions, including a recent show with MILCON Gallery, in addition to several group and juried exhibitions. My work has been in a number of publications including New American Paintings, Inside Artists, and Studio Visit Magazine.
