I have been engaging my work with ideas derived from the pictorial works of artists Jack Whitten, Sterling Ruby, and Gerhard Richter. A synthesis of these interests is materializing in my latest body of work. This piece explores the assimilation of aerosol painting, pyrography, and sanding techniques on wood. This ethereal series solicits our visual perception by suggesting a discoverable lattice of motifs emerging out of defacement and obscuration. This painting is on cradled wood panel with natural edges. It comes lightly varnished ready to hang.
About the Artist
The natural world is the blueprint for Melisa’s work, while allusions to past and contemporary culture inform its development. She approaches her artwork by developing her own hybridization of artistic practices. Melisa relies on commercial tools such as blow torches and electrical sanders to create her work, in addition to other labor-intensive methods. By exploring the assimilation of aerosol painting, pyrography, and sanding on wood, Melisa produces unique abstract art that is simultaneously geometric and organic.

- Removing Myself, Abstract PaintingBy Gary J. Noland Jr.Located in San Francisco, CA
Artist Comments
Artist Gary J. Noland Jr. unveils an enthralling abstract piece dominated by black and white strokes. He combines two of his signature series to create this captivating composition. Gary creates tension by applying a brightly colored grid to a muted surface that is scrapped, scratched, and sanded to reveal what lies beneath.About the Artist
Artist Gary Noland Jr. creates expressive abstracts with rich colors, splashes, and mark-making. “I create layers that are then scraped, scratched, and sanded to give a glimpse of what lies beneath the surface,†says Gary. Artistically inclined at a young age, Gary was inspired to pursue his creativity after winning a poster-making contest in the first grade. Later, he completed his Master of Fine Arts at the University of Kentucky, fully realizing his dynamic abstractions. Gary worked in quality departments of various manufacturing plants—their floors layered with paint and tape that had been scratched or worn down over many years—became a key influence of his distinctive style. Today, his process begins with images of old floors...Category21st Century and Contemporary Abstract Abstract Paintings

- Floral Abstract, Abstract PaintingBy Julia HackerLocated in San Francisco, CA
Artist Comments
Artist Julia Hacker displays enticing abstraction of floral forms that blend the elements of fauvist landscapes and naturalistic plein-air scenes. The harmony between organic shapes and the vibrant hues of magenta, orange, and white adds mystery to the jungle setting. The interplay of light and dark tones gives depth and a sense of allure to the composition.About the Artist
Julia works from a studio in her home that overlooks a wooded ravine and finds inspiration in the natural order of the universe. Her art draws from many sources of imagery, but consistently possesses a magical and ethereal quality. Whether the image depicts stylized snowfall, glistening flora, or a collaged figure, the work exudes a fleeting element of beauty that transcends reality. Julia primarily creates using painting or illustrated collage. When she paints, she foregoes sketching beforehand, instead allows emotion and intuition to drive the composition. Her collages are influenced by illustration techniques acquired from her Master’s degree in fashion design. Julia likes being able to switch between the two artistic methods, often working simultaneously on multiple projects to keep her creative inspiration fresh and constantly evolving.Words that describe this painting: organic shapes, plants, nature, abstract expressionism, leaves, floral, acrylicpaint, jungle, abstract, flora, abstract, flora, acrylic painting, orange
