Melissa Shaak’s “Hoopla” is a 40 x 26 inch abstract acrylic painting on top-quality Arches paper. Large red and pink shapes sit atop spindly legs against a bold and vibrant grey background. A field of green, orange and yellow dances in the foreground. Confetti-like dots create a festive, celebratory atmosphere. The painting, signed on the reverse lower right, was created during the artist’s residency at Vermont Studio Center. It is sold unframed.
Melissa Shaak's abstract acrylic paintings balance color shifts with amorphous forms that appear ponderous, whimsical or surreal. She explores how the act of concealing, by means of overpainting with large swaths of flat color, reveals and brings focus to the sprawl of life in the layers underneath. In Shaak’s most recent work, she experiments with both imagery and medium; archetypal figures find themselves in paintings, sculptural cutouts of their forms, and as an ensemble captured on video. Shaak lives and works in Somerville, MA. She is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.
