Melissa Shaak’s “Ladders” is a 30 x 22 x 2 inch acrylic painting, with oil pastel accents, on paper mounted on cradled board. The painting’s curving, irregular ladders, in flat grey outlined in teal, contain mysterious points of entry to a colorful world of organic shapes of yellows, pinks and oranges. The large, surrounding tear-drop shape is embedded in a field of amorphous circles of powder-blue. The striking image invites the viewer into the artist’s exploration of contrasts: movement vs. stillness, surface vs. below the surface, climbing up the ladders vs. descending.
Melissa Shaak's abstract acrylic paintings balance color shifts with amorphous forms that appear ponderous, whimsical or surreal. She explores how the act of concealing, by means of overpainting with large swaths of flat color, reveals and brings focus to the sprawl of life in the layers underneath. In Shaak’s most recent work, she experiments with both imagery and medium; archetypal figures find themselves in paintings, sculptural cutouts of their forms, and as an ensemble captured on video. Shaak lives and works in Somerville, MA. She is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.
