About

"Deleted Story" is a halftone painting of Julian Story's "The Black Prince at Crecy", executed in what Porten calls a deleted manner. The image is comprised of a mixture of both the positive and negative halftones of the original painting. From a distance, you can clearly make out a sense of objects in space, but up close, the pattern of lines take over. He chose this painting because it displays the death of King John of Bohemia, who had been blind for 10 years prior to arriving at the Battle of Crecy during the Hundred Years’ War. Porten describes this event: “Essentially, many years ago, atop a horse, clad in a noisy suit of metal, a blind man sought to fight for his country by heaving a piece of metal that he held in his hand into his enemies. Making this painting, I wondered if this wasn't the sort of mental picture that King John had, while selecting which ghost to brain with his axe.” For Porten, this story symbolizes what it feels like to be a participant in the contemporary art world today. There are quite a lot of artists working away in their studios, or reviewing works as a critic, trying to create meaningful work. This image is what it feels like for him to sort through the discourse of painting, which has been declared dead on more than one occasion. There is a lot of theory that, once consumed, an artist can easily feel like they've just had something taken away from them. Porten recalls the words of Mr. Kurt Vonnegut, "I have long felt that any reviewer who expresses rage and loathing for a novel or play or poem is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae or a banana split." Most of Porten’s recent work has referenced how he imagines the brain works when processing ideas or concepts with mental pictures. Some images are easier to consume, visually, than others. People often remark on how painful it is to look images like “Deleted Story,” to which Porten tells the story of the riot during the opening performance of composer Igor Stravinsky's ballet and orchestral concert “The Rite of Spring.” A hundred years ago, the artistic palette was very different. He imagines it won't be long before an image like "Deleted Story" could be displayed next to what would be considered today, a tranquil bucolic landscape, with little difference in how they are viewed. - Michael Porten is an interdisciplinary artist based in Savannah, Georgia, where he received a BFA in illustration & an MFA in painting from The Savannah College of Art & Design. His inspiration is often drawn from contemporary pop culture & iconography, focusing on “the synchronicity of seemingly disparate content & contexts,” & his points of reference range from Vonnegut to Voltaire. Michael's work is about exhausting the possible. His process consists of taking an idea & exploring its variations & combinations in sketches & on his computer, then pushing it through as many physical, painted, printed or sculpted variations as necessary until it reaches a state of maximum aesthetic density. His work has been exhibited in galleries in the U.S. & abroad & has been discussed in publications such as New American Paintings, Oxford American Magazine & the Metropolis Magazine online edition.
