Nancy Agati
Volo II: abstract Italian influence painting/drawing, white on black art paper

2013

About the Item

Nancy Agati's "Portico" series consists of mixed media paintings / drawings on black paper, which emphasize intricately drawn lines and painted brush strokes from handmade, clay-based paint. These images, which display a lace-like, mandala quality, are patterns generated by the repetition of a design element from a carved wooden doorway in Rome, Italy. The placement of shape and repetition of pattern within each piece, has become a loose mathematical method for the artist to explore a multitude of visual possibilities. All pigments are mixed thoroughly with Golden's Acrylic Polymer mediums, and the entire piece has a final coat of satin polymer medium to protect the surface. The edges are lined with acid free linen tape on the back to prevent tearing. Signed by the artist. Nancy Agati’s work addresses transformations and patterns in nature through physical investigations of materials. Her multiple disciplinary work includes works on paper, sculpture, textiles, site-specific installation and public art. Agati holds a BFA from Alfred University, School of Art & Design, NY and an MFA from The University of the Arts, Philadelphia, PA. She has exhibited her work widely throughout Philadelphia, nationally, and abroad including solo exhibitions at the Philadelphia Art Alliance, Pentimenti Gallery, Philadelphia, and Hillyer Art Space, Washington, DC. Nancy Agati was a recipient of a Windows of Opportunity Grant from the Leeway Foundation and has been awarded artist-in-residence placements at the Santa Fe Art Institute, New Mexico, Lo Studio dei Nipoti, Calabria, Italy, and Main & Station in Nova Scotia. Her time spent in Southern Italy initiated several bodies of work, including "Portico" series, which relate to plant formations, traditional lace patterning, and architectural geometry. Works from the "Portico" series are in several prominent collections, three of which were recently added to the permanent collection at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Exhibited: 2018 NoBA Artspaces, Bala Cynwyd, PA; 2016 Sonesta Hotel and Art Bar, Philadelphia, PA; 2014 International Art & Artists, Hillyer Art Space, Washington, DC. This piece is unframed and ships rolled in a tube.
