About the Item

Hidden, by Nancy Vorm, encaustic on panel, 8 x 8 inches, $400 Encaustic paintings are created by combining dyes or other materials with a melted wax medium (usually beeswax and damar resin), and pouring the molten mixture onto a surface. The wax can be manipulated and textured while it cools, and the artist can achieve a wide range of almost-transparent to extremely saturated colors and layering effects. Encaustics are also naturally very archival, and the finished product is more durable than some initially suspect. The surface will repel dust, is unaffected by humidity, and will not yellow or darken over time. However, your new piece should be kept out of direct sunlight, as well as extreme temperatures (wax will melt at 150° F / 65° C, while below freezing temperatures might cause cracking). Always transport with a smooth sheet of wax paper on the surface to prevent scratches or imprints from other plastic materials. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Originally a weaver, Nancy Vorm served as a member of the Duneland Weaver’s Guild in Northwest Indiana before relocating to the Wasatch Front. In 2004, she returned to school and in 2009, received a bachelor’s degree in Painting and Drawing from the University of Utah. For the past several years, Vorm has worked in encaustic (painting with wax). Her work is a continual exploration of layers and textures in various media and techniques. “My inspiration comes from observing the imperfections found both in nature and my surroundings. Utilizing natural materials and elements is always part of my process. Beeswax, papers, and applications of inks and rusts are the elements that occupy me most.”

The gestural paintings of Hyunmee Lee are sumptuously minimal. Rich forms advance from buttery canvases like an abstract garden. Gauzy veils of paint hover like soft air against the ebony weight of matter. Light peeks through translucent shapes like sunlight illuminating soft mist. Texture swirls and echoes across the canvas as if carved by waves or eroded by the wind. The viewer, invited into a realm of contemplation and meditation, is surprised to look away and see the physical world existing in only three dimensions. But perhaps that is precisely the experience the artist would like the viewer to have. In her current exhibition, Touch, on display at the Phillips Gallery...
