Elizabeth Gregory-Gruen
Cut Work, Freehand Cut with Surgical Scalpel, Silk-Screened: 'Autumn Fade 1-In'

2019

About the Item

“CUT WORK” is an evolving examination of emotion experienced through the inspired meeting of blade and paper. Beginning with the featureless plane of a blank paper canvas and a surgeon’s scalpel, Gregory-Gruen finds direction spontaneously, or as she says, “I cut from the gut.” Though seemingly perfect and symmetrical at first glance, the original images are cut with no guide, defined by the authentic energy of the free hand cutting. The reverse-relief effect is achieved by first cutting what will become the top layer of paper, with each subsequent sheet layered and cut individually. About her process, Gregory-Gruen says, “It is visceral. A meditation. Imperfection is perfection.” About the Artist: Growing up in Chicago, Elizabeth Gregory – Gruen was introduced to the architectural world of Frank Lloyd Wright. This inspired her imagination to experiment with 3-dimensional design using natural light and shadow. Elizabeth came to New York City in 1985 to study Fashion Design at Parsons School of Design. Graduating in 1989 with a BFA in Fashion Design she went on to work at top design houses. Her work has appeared in major fashion magazine editorials including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and InStyle. She currently resides in New York City with her husband Bob Gruen.

    By Alex Guofeng Cao

In a captivating new collection, Alex Guofeng Cao dazzles audiences with his unique twist on instantly recognizable images. Inspired by history and pop culture, Cao manipulates one iconic image to create another in his extraordinary large-scale works. From a distance, the pieces appear to be a singular image but as the viewer approaches closer, you find each work is a masterfully crafted compilation of minute detailed images layered next to one another, creating a mesmerizing and hypnotic optical illusion. Cao meticulously places each smaller image to form a dynamic gradient from dark to light which tricks the eye into seeing one image. This expertise in contrast is exemplified in all of his works, from striking black and white pieces to stunning explorations in high-definition color. He cleverly mirrors this visual contrast in his subject matter by subverting the main image and creating a dialogue between the macrocosm and microcosm. Take the piece, Ali vs Armstrong; here we see the iconic image of Muhammed Ali’s victory composed of thousands of tiny portraits...
