Parris Jaru's Shaped by the Elements is a 60 x 39 inches oil painting representing a poem laid on a green background. The modulated green shades frame the poem placed in the center. The surface is defined by a thick impasto of paint, made with plant based pigments that Jaru collects himself during his long exploratory trips through India. The surface is scraped and incised with words and signs, almost like graffiti on a wall or inscriptions on an archaeological fragment. The poem is written on top of a different colored impasto that creates the illusion as if it was written on ancient pergamena.
