About the Item

The Leipzig painter Peter Krauskopf (born in 1966) is intently focused on colour as an artistic working material, as the foundation of every picture. In multilayered processes of painting, he explores colour in its resistance and substance, attempts to examine and outbid its intrinsic qualities until it discloses narrative structures through its painterly treatment – quasi-automatically, without a desire for concrete reference. The almost scenic spaces that are evoked extend from the figurative landscape representations of German Romanticism to the entirely abstract works of Informalism and American colour field painting. At the heart of the exhibition is a group of works from 2014: after receiving a double coat of painting, they are “ruined” in a controlled fashion – Krauskopf scratches the top layer of paint from the picture surface in vertical strips, partly leaving the remnants of paint hanging from the canvas in lumps or clumps (Ohne Titel, B 101113). In this “destroyed beauty”, as Krauskopf calls it, two contrasting techniques of painting are combined: underneath, there is a controlled chromatic colour gradient, which – in its painterly finesse and atmospheric density – alludes to the imaginations of traditional landscape painting. However, the physical destruction of the second monochromatic application of colour reveals just how much the canvas, as a “window”, separates the physical space of the viewer from the imaginary pictorial space of the colour gradient. This double occupation of the canvas is also apparent in a further group of works, Ohne Titel, B 240214. Here, too, the foundation is an extremely fine colour gradient, and a contrasting, coarsely structured surface is applied by paint in the midst of it. Compared to its pictorial undercoat, this area asserts immense physical presence and resembles a picture within a picture. Krauskopf sees this as an assertion of the painter who can only painting his “counterpart” – a kind of citation of his self. In this sense, Krauskopf’s exhibition documents a process of the artist’s self-assurance.
